What is an OT Security?

An OT (Operational Technology) Security job focuses on protecting industrial control systems (ICS) and critical infrastructure from cyber threats. Professionals in this role assess vulnerabilities, implement security measures, and respond to incidents affecting manufacturing, energy, transportation, and other critical sectors. They work with both IT and OT teams to ensure the safety and reliability of industrial operations. Key responsibilities include risk assessments, network segmentation, threat monitoring, and compliance with industry standards like NIST and IEC 62443.

What does an OT Security do?

Professionals in OT Security are responsible for monitoring industrial networks, identifying and mitigating vulnerabilities, and ensuring compliance with security standards specific to critical infrastructure. Daily tasks may include performing risk assessments, deploying and maintaining security tools, investigating security incidents, and collaborating closely with engineering teams to implement best practices. You’ll often participate in incident response drills and keep detailed documentation on systems and security events. This role requires both proactive problem-solving and the ability to work under pressure during real-time cyber incidents.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in OT Security, and why are they important?

To thrive in OT (Operational Technology) Security, you need a strong understanding of industrial control systems (ICS), network security, and cybersecurity fundamentals, often supported by a degree in information security, computer science, or engineering. Familiarity with security assessment tools (such as Nessus and Wireshark), ICS/SCADA systems, and relevant certifications like CISSP, GICSP, or CompTIA Security+ is typically preferred. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex risks clearly are valuable soft skills for this role. These capabilities are essential to protecting critical infrastructure from cyber threats and ensuring the safety and reliability of industrial operations.
