What is an OT Infrastructure Engineer?

OT Infrastructure Engineers are professionals who design, implement, and maintain the operational technology (OT) systems critical to industrial environments such as manufacturing plants, utilities, and energy facilities. They focus on the hardware and software that control physical devices and processes, ensuring these systems are secure, reliable, and seamlessly integrated with IT networks. Their role often involves working with industrial control systems (ICS), SCADA, and other specialized technologies to support safe and efficient operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an OT Infrastructure Engineer?

To thrive as an OT Infrastructure Engineer, you need a solid background in industrial control systems, network architecture, and cybersecurity, often supported by a degree in engineering or information technology. Familiarity with SCADA, DCS, PLCs, and relevant cybersecurity certifications like CISSP or GICSP is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications are important to ensure the secure, reliable, and efficient operation of critical industrial infrastructure.

What are some common challenges faced by OT Infrastructure Engineers when integrating legacy systems with modern technologies?

OT Infrastructure Engineers often encounter difficulties when integrating legacy operational technology systems with newer IT solutions because older equipment may lack support for modern protocols or security features. Bridging this gap requires careful planning, custom interfaces, and rigorous testing to ensure reliability and security. Collaboration with both IT and OT teams is essential to balance operational continuity with technological advancement. Engineers should also be prepared to manage compatibility issues and minimize downtime during upgrades.

Job description

Position Description Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation's largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. Over the years we have worked very hard to keep Seattle's electricity affordable, reliable, and environmentally sound. Today, City Light is a recognized national leader in energy efficiency and environmental stewardship.

Seattle City Light is currently investing in power grid modernization with multiple Operational Technology (OT) computer system projects for power grid management and control that address substation, distribution and power plant facility operations and automation. The OT infrastructure platform is a fundamental component to successful grid modernization. The Seattle City Light Power Systems Automation (PSA) team is seeking an experienced, mission-driven OT Systems Integrator to support and modernize the server, network, and application infrastructure that powers the utility's 24x7 operations.

This position plays a critical role in ensuring reliable energy delivery across the city. You will help design, administer, secure, and continuously improve the OT systems that support grid operations, including the Energy Management System (EMS), SCADA infrastructure, substation computing resources, virtualized server platforms, and associated cyber-security technologies. If you enjoy working at the intersection of infrastructure engineering, system administration, security, and real-world operational mission support, this is a great opportunity to make an impact.

Job Responsibilities As an OT Systems Integrator, you'll be part of the team that is responsible for OT design, implementation, operations, and maintenance support. OT infrastructure changes require precise collaboration with application teams, control room dispatchers, communications electricians, cyber security, substation and power plant engineering and regulatory compliance stakeholders. The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to following duties.

Manage server lifecycle tasks including provisioning, patching, hardening, backups, and configuration management. Operate and support Dell VxRail and VMware/vSphere hyper-converged infrastructure.

Improve system availability, reliability, and performance for 24x7 operations environments. Develop and maintain automation for server deployment, monitoring, patching, configuration updates, and security tasks. Operational Technology (OT) Systems Support Configure, deploy, and maintain OT applications used for grid control, monitoring, forecasting, and analytics.

Integrate vendor systems, APIs, and data pipelines (OSI EMS/SCADA, OATI market tools, PI and Oracle historians, Oracle NMS). Troubleshoot complex issues spanning servers, networks, databases, and application stacks. Collaboration and Operational Support Work closely with system dispatchers, engineers, cyber security teams, vendors, and consultants to deliver integrated solutions.

Participate in the 24x7 callout support rotation for mission critical power grid operations systems. Mentor teammates and share technical knowledge to foster team growth. Network and Cyber Security Support Collaborate with network engineering teams to support routers, switches, and firewalls (Cisco IOS/NX OS, Palo Alto PAN OS).

Assist in designing and maintaining secure communication networks for substations, power plants, and control centers. Support and implement cybersecurity tools and monitoring platforms (QRadar, Tripwire, Cybereason, Tenable/Nessus). Maintain compliance with NERC CIP and other regulatory security requirements.

Automation, Scripting and DevOps Improvements Build automations using Python, PowerShell, Bash, and workflow tools to improve reliability and reduce manual work. Create dashboards, reports, and data extracts to support engineering and operational teams. Develop and maintain documentation, runbooks, design specifications, and change records.
