Job description

UtiliSource is hiring an OSP Engineer I to design and verify fiber network plans from its local office.

This is a Monday–Friday, in-office position supporting FTTH and outside plant projects through route design, field information review, constructability verification, and design documentation.

At this time, there is no option for remote.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design aerial and underground fiber networks based on project requirements, field data, and client standards.
  • Review and verify OSP designs for accuracy, constructability, utility conflicts, and missing information.
  • Develop routing plans, low-level designs, splice diagrams, construction sheets, and related project documentation.
  • Review field notes, photographs, measurements, utility information, and existing infrastructure records.
  • Confirm proposed routes, cable placement, structure locations, clearances, and connection points.
  • Identify design conflicts and coordinate corrections with engineers, drafters, permitting teams, and field personnel.
  • Update designs based on redlines, field findings, client changes, and QA/QC feedback.
  • Maintain organized project files, documentation, and version control.
  • Support occasional site visits to verify routing or resolve design questions.
  • Travel out of state on rare occasions when required for project verification or support.

Required Qualifications, Skills & Abilities

  • At least three years of experience in an OSP, fiber construction, utility coordination, field engineering, or telecommunications role.
  • Understanding of aerial and underground fiber network construction.
  • Ability to read utility maps, construction prints, field notes, and OSP design documents.
  • Ability to evaluate proposed designs for accuracy and real-world constructability.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate with engineering, drafting, permitting, and field construction teams.
  • Proficiency with or willingness to learn CAD, GIS, and OSP design software.
  • Willingness to apply feedback and revise designs according to client and QA/QC standards.
  • Must be local and able to work Monday–Friday in the office.
  • Ability to complete occasional site visits and very limited out-of-state travel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing or reviewing FTTH and OSP fiber networks.
  • Experience with MicroStation, ArcGIS, or similar CAD/GIS platforms.
  • Familiarity with NESC standards, permitting, utility coordination, splice planning, or as-built documentation.
