On a daily basis, they help prepare exam rooms, sterilize instruments, take dental impressions and X-rays, and assist the orthodontist with procedures such as fitting braces or adjusting appliances. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Orthodontics Assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Orthodontics Assistant, you need a solid understanding of dental procedures, oral anatomy, and infection control, often supported by a dental assisting certificate or relevant on-the-job training. Familiarity with dental radiography, orthodontic tools, and practice management software is typically required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and a caring demeanor help build rapport with patients and support the orthodontist effectively. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring efficient patient care, maintaining safety, and contributing to a positive clinical environment.

Where do orthodontic assistants make the most money?

Orthodontic assistants tend to earn higher salaries in regions with a higher cost of living and greater demand for dental services, such as urban areas and states with a strong healthcare industry. Salaries can also increase with experience, certifications, and advanced skills like taking digital impressions or managing orthodontic appliances.

Becoming an orthodontics assistant typically requires completing a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by a dental assisting program that can take from several months up to a year. Certification or on-the-job training may also be necessary, but the role generally does not require extensive years of education like becoming an orthodontist.

What can an orthodontic assistant do?
