Job description

Who We Are
Tomo is a digital mortgage company on a mission to eliminate the greed and complexity in lending, helping homebuyers save thousands of dollars. Our AI-driven customer experience makes the lending process faster, less frustrating, and more affordable. By passing these savings directly to homebuyers, we eliminate excessive fees and inflated rates that cost Americans billions each year. Backed by top-tier venture investors, including Ribbit, Citi Ventures, NFX and Progressive Insurance, Tomo is poised to become one of the most valuable fintech startups of our generation.
Junior Mortgage Loan Processor Team Lead
Location: New York, NY
Reports To: Loan Processing Manager
Type: Full-Time; Hybrid (in office Mon-Wed, remote Thurs-Friday)
About the Role
This is a hands-on leadership role for an experienced loan processing professional who's ready to step into a player-coach position. As the Junior Loan Processor Team Lead, you'll own the day-to-day execution of a team of ~10 Junior Loan Processors - keeping files moving, quality high, and your people developing. You know the mortgage process cold, and you're energized by teaching others how it works.
You'll be the primary escalation point for your team on anything touching appraisals, title, homeowners insurance, and employment verifications - and you'll set the standard for how this work gets done at Tomo.
What You'll Do
Team Leadership
• Directly supervise and support a team of ~10 Junior Loan Processors, providing day-to-day coaching, feedback, and prioritization guidance
• Onboard and train new team members on Tomo's systems, workflows, and mortgage fundamentals
• Monitor team workload and redistribute files as needed to ensure SLAs are met
• Conduct regular 1:1s and contribute to performance reviews for direct reports
• Serve as the first escalation point for complex file issues, flagging to the Junior Loan Processing Manager when needed
Pipeline & Quality Oversight
• Maintain visibility into the team's full pipeline, ensuring files are progressing and nothing is aging or stalled
• Review team output for accuracy, completeness, and compliance before files advance to underwriting
• Identify patterns in errors or delays and proactively address them through coaching or process adjustment
Third-Party Coordination & Subject Matter Expertise
• Serve as the team's in-house expert on appraisals, title, homeowners insurance (HOI), and employment/income verifications
• Troubleshoot complex third-party issues - including appraisal escalations, title curative matters, HOI coverage gaps, and VOE discrepancies - with a clear understanding of how each impacts loan eligibility and timing
• Stay current on agency guidelines and investor overlays as they relate to third-party documentation requirements
Who You Are
• 3-5+ years of mortgage loan processing experience, with strong hands-on knowledge of the full loan cycle
• Deep familiarity with appraisals (order management, review, escalations), title (commitments, curative, endorsements), HOI (coverage requirements, binders, declarations), and employment verifications (written/verbal VOEs, 4506-C, self-employment docs)
• A natural teacher - you get energy from helping others grow, not just doing the work yourself
• Highly organized with strong attention to detail and the ability to manage competing priorities across a team
• Clear, direct communicator - comfortable giving feedback, setting expectations, and escalating when needed
• Experience with LOS platforms (Encompass or similar); comfortable learning new systems
• Prior lead or supervisory experience a plus, but not required if you're ready to step into it
Why This Role Matters
Your team is the engine that keeps loans moving. By leading them well - and teaching them to handle the complex pieces of the pipeline - you directly impact how fast and smoothly Tomo closes loans for real customers. This is a high-visibility role with a clear path toward Operations leadership.
Employee Benefits
We strive to anticipate your needs in order for you to be a healthy, motivated, and happy team member. We provide a variety of competitive benefits including (but not limited to):
  • Equity Ownership: All teammates receive stock options-we win together
  • Comprehensive Medical, Dental, and Vision plans for you and your dependents with some plans 100% covered
  • Work-life balance and a generous paid time off policy
  • In order to support teammates who become parents, Tomo Mortgage provides paid parental leave
  • 401(k) retirement plan
