What is an oral surgery fellowship?

An oral surgery fellowship is a specialized, post-residency training program for dentists or oral and maxillofacial surgeons who wish to gain advanced skills in a specific area of oral surgery, such as oncology, craniofacial surgery, or cosmetic surgery. These fellowships typically last one to two years and provide intensive, hands-on clinical experience under the supervision of experienced surgeons. Fellows are exposed to complex surgical cases, research opportunities, and often teaching responsibilities, allowing them to develop expertise beyond the standard scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery residency programs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an oral surgery fellowship?

To thrive in an Oral Surgery Fellowship, you need advanced dental and surgical knowledge, clinical competence, and completion of a DDS/DMD degree with relevant residency training. Familiarity with surgical instruments, anesthesia techniques, radiographic imaging systems, and certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) are typically required. Strong manual dexterity, problem-solving, effective communication, and teamwork skills set exceptional candidates apart. These competencies are vital for ensuring patient safety, delivering high-quality surgical outcomes, and collaborating efficiently within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

What are some common challenges faced during an oral surgery fellowship, and how can fellows effectively manage them?

Oral Surgery Fellows often face challenges such as balancing a demanding surgical caseload with academic responsibilities and adapting to complex, high-acuity cases under supervision. Fellows may also encounter steep learning curves with advanced surgical techniques and patient management. Effective time management, proactive communication with attending surgeons and the multidisciplinary team, and seeking feedback are key strategies to navigate these challenges. Regular participation in case discussions and staying current with literature can also help fellows build confidence and competence throughout their fellowship.

What is the difference between Oral Surgery Fellowship vs Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency?

Job description

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon - Founding Opportunity | Boston Waterfront

Boston Oral Surgical & Endodontic Associates (BOSEA) is seeking an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon to join our new, purpose-built specialty practice on Boston's waterfront.

BOSEA is privately owned, doctor-led, and not affiliated with a DSO or private-equity platform. We believe clinical decisions should remain with the doctors, and we are building the practice around excellent patient care, clinical autonomy, and long-term relationships with our patients and referring dentists.

BOSEA brings oral surgery and endodontics together in one location, creating natural opportunities for collaboration, coordinated treatment planning, and referrals between the oral surgeon and endodontist.

We are part of The Berik Group, a privately owned, doctor-led family of dental and specialty practices that has cared for patients throughout Greater Boston for more than 25 years. Our established practices provide an existing patient and referral base, while BOSEA is also developing its own network of referring dentists throughout Boston and the surrounding communities.

The Opportunity

We are looking for a surgeon who wants the autonomy of private practice with the support needed to grow a successful surgical practice.

Clinical opportunities include:

  • Dental implants and complex implant surgery

  • Full-arch / All-on-X treatment

  • Wisdom teeth removal

  • Surgical extractions

  • Bone grafting and regenerative procedures

  • IV sedation

  • Comprehensive oral and maxillofacial surgery

  • Interdisciplinary treatment with endodontics, restorative dentists, and other specialists

BOSEA is a new specialty practice designed specifically around oral surgery and endodontics, with modern clinical space, technology, staffing, marketing, and operational support.

Why BOSEA

Private, Doctor-Led Practice
We are not a DSO and are not backed by private equity. Clinical decisions remain with our doctors.

Oral Surgery + Endodontics
Having both specialties under one roof creates built-in opportunities for referrals, collaboration, and coordinated treatment planning.

Established Referral Base
The surgeon will benefit from referrals within BOSEA as well as patients and referrals from The Berik Group's established practices. We are also actively building relationships with referring dentists throughout Greater Boston.

Clinical Autonomy
We want our surgeon focused on providing excellent oral surgery. We provide the team and support around them.

Boston Waterfront Location
BOSEA is located on Boston's waterfront in the North End, convenient to downtown Boston and the Greater Boston market.

Competitive Compensation + Daily Guarantee
We offer highly competitive compensation along with a daily guarantee during the initial ramp-up period.

Who We Are Looking For

We are seeking a board-certified or board-eligible Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon who is clinically excellent, patient-focused, collaborative, and interested in helping establish a growing private specialty practice.

Candidates should be eligible for Massachusetts dental licensure and appropriately trained and credentialed to provide IV sedation/general anesthesia.

Experience or a strong interest in implants, full-arch treatment, and comprehensive oral surgery is preferred.

We welcome conversations with experienced oral surgeons as well as surgeons completing residency or fellowship training.

For a surgeon who values private practice, clinical autonomy, strong referral relationships, and the opportunity to help shape a new specialty practice from the beginning, BOSEA offers a unique opportunity in the Boston market.

Location: Boston, Massachusetts - Waterfront/North End

Compensation Information:
$500000.00 / Annually - $1000000.00 / AnnuallyDetails:
Competitive percentage of collections with a guaranteed daily minimum during the initial ramp-up period.
