What is an oral surgery assistant?

An oral surgery assistant helps a dentist with surgical operations. As an oral surgery assistant, your duties are to prepare patients and the operating room for the dentist. Specifically, you sterilize instruments and lay them out in an organized fashion, have a patient’s X-rays and chart on hand for the dental surgeon or periodontist, and prepare the patient by applying topical anesthetic and explaining the procedure. During oral surgery, you monitor anesthesia, help with suction, and keep the patient’s mouth clear. You also take notes and document the procedure for the dentist.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an oral surgery assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Oral Surgery Assistant, you need a solid understanding of dental procedures, infection control, and patient care, often supported by a dental assisting certificate or relevant experience. Familiarity with dental radiography, surgical instruments, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is typically required. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and the ability to reassure and communicate clearly with patients are standout soft skills. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure safe, efficient surgeries and a positive experience for both patients and the surgical team.

What are some of the common challenges faced by oral surgery assistants during surgical procedures?

Oral Surgery Assistants often encounter challenges such as managing patient anxiety, ensuring strict adherence to sterilization protocols, and efficiently anticipating the surgeon's needs during procedures. They must remain focused and organized in a fast-paced environment, handling surgical instruments and materials with precision. Effective communication and teamwork with the oral surgeon and other staff are critical to maintaining patient safety and procedural flow.

Oral Surgery in Reno NV, Dental Implants and Wisdom Teeth Removal

Now Hiring: Oral Surgery Assistant

Join a Team That Changes Lives, One Smile at a Time

We are a private Oral Surgery Practice looking for a skilled, compassionate Oral Surgery Assistant to join our growing team across our Reno and Sparks locations. If you thrive in a fast-paced clinical environment, love working with your hands, and want to be part of a practice that genuinely cares — about patients and about you — we want to meet you. We pride ourselves on genuine and unparalleled patient care and we are looking for an oral surgery assistant who brings extraordinary patient care to collaborate the same exceptional care with our team, referring offices, patients and their families.

Why join our team?

  • Work chairside with board-certified oral & maxillofacial surgeons on procedures ranging from wisdom teeth extractions and dental implants to full-arch reconstruction and facial trauma care.
  • A team-first culture, small enough that your work matters, you'll have the training, mentorship, and equipment to do your best work.
  • Community roots. We're proud to partner with many local non-profit organizations and provide dental care to the underserved — because giving back is part of who we are.
  • Room to grow, cross-training, continuing education support, and a clear path to advance your skills in oral surgery, sedation assisting, and practice operations.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive pay, bonus potential, and annual merit reviews
  • Paid Time Off
  • 401(k) plan with company match
  • Health Savings Account (HSA) with HDHP health plans
  • Medical (including virtual care), dental, and vision coverage
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance
  • Short & long-term disability
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • BLS/CPR certification support

What You'll Do

  • Assist surgeons chairside during extractions, implant placement, bone grafting, and other oral & maxillofacial procedures
  • Prepare and sterilize instruments, maintaining strict infection control standards
  • Monitor patients before, during, and after sedation/anesthesia
  • Take digital x-rays and intra oral scans
  • Support patients and their families with warmth and clear communication before and after procedures
  • Help keep our Reno and Sparks offices running smoothly as part of a tight-knit clinical team effort

What We're Looking For

  • Dental/oral surgery assistant experience preferred
  • DAANCE certification(or willingness to obtain)
  • CPR/BLS certification
  • A calm, steady presence — surgery can be intense, and patients look to you for reassurance
  • Someone who takes pride in precision, cleanliness, patient care and teamwork
