What is an OR LPN?

OR LPNs, or Operating Room Licensed Practical Nurses, are nursing professionals who assist in surgical procedures by preparing the operating room, sterilizing equipment, and supporting surgeons and registered nurses during operations. They play a key role in ensuring patient safety and maintaining sterile conditions. OR LPNs also help monitor patients before, during, and after surgery, and may be responsible for documenting procedures and patient care. Their specialized training enables them to handle the fast-paced and high-pressure environment of the operating room.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an OR LPN, and why are they important?

To thrive as an OR LPN (Operating Room Licensed Practical Nurse), you need a practical nursing diploma, state LPN licensure, and a solid understanding of perioperative procedures and sterile techniques. Familiarity with surgical instruments, EHR systems, and infection control protocols is typically required, and some employers may prefer Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Attention to detail, teamwork, and strong communication are essential soft skills in this role. These skills ensure patient safety, efficient surgical workflows, and effective collaboration with surgical teams.

What are some typical challenges faced by OR LPNs during surgical procedures, and how can they be managed?

OR LPNs often encounter challenges such as adapting to rapidly changing surgical situations, maintaining strict sterile technique, and coordinating efficiently with a multidisciplinary surgical team. Managing these challenges involves strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Many OR LPNs find that proactively reviewing surgical cases, participating in pre-op briefings, and seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues can greatly enhance their confidence and effectiveness in the operating room environment.
