What is optometry?

Optometry is a healthcare profession focused on examining, diagnosing, treating, and managing disorders of the eyes and visual system. Optometrists are trained to perform eye exams, prescribe corrective lenses, detect eye diseases, and provide certain treatments. They play a crucial role in maintaining eye health and may also offer advice on eye care and vision protection. In many regions, optometrists work closely with ophthalmologists and other healthcare providers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an optometrist?

To thrive as an Optometrist, you need a Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree, state licensure, and strong knowledge of eye health, vision correction, and diagnostic techniques. Familiarity with specialized equipment such as phoropters, autorefractors, slit lamps, and electronic health record (EHR) systems is essential. Excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly help set top professionals apart. These skills ensure accurate diagnoses, effective treatment plans, and positive patient experiences in a clinical setting.

What are some common challenges optometrists face in managing patient care within a busy practice?

Optometrists often manage a high volume of patients each day, which can make it challenging to provide personalized care while staying on schedule. Balancing administrative responsibilities, such as documenting patient records and managing insurance claims, adds to the workload. Additionally, staying updated with advancements in eye care technology and maintaining compliance with healthcare regulations require ongoing professional development. Effective time management and strong communication skills are essential for navigating these challenges and ensuring high-quality patient outcomes.

Job description

Description
About the role
As a Clinical Manager at MyEyeDr., your role is to oversee a group of practicing Optometrists across a set of offices in a defined geographical area. This is a multi-unit optometric leadership role designed for experienced Optometrists with strong clinical judgment and a proven track record in high-volume, high-performance practice environments. In this role, you will translate clinical strategies into reality and advocate for the patient and Optometrist experience. In practice, that means you sit at the intersection of care quality and people experience-a rare and powerful opportunity within healthcare organizations.
Your schedule is thoughtfully split between in-clinic time (60%) and dedicated leadership time (40%) so that you stay current on best practices and maintain credibility as you lead your team of Optometrists. In your leadership capacity, you influence patient care standards by ensuring clinical excellence through observation and coaching and supporting early tenure Optometrists. You will also expand patient access by matching appointment demand with Optometrist availability (schedules) and participate in the hiring process of new Optometrists.
Reporting to a Regional Clinical Director (also an Optometrist), you will be part of the Professional Services field leadership team who reports to the Chief Medical Officer. You will partner frequently with Operations field leadership, HR Business Partners, and the clinical workforce planning team.
This role will manage approximately 47 offices in the Dallas/Ft. Worth market area and requires travel about 1-2 days per week.
You will
  • Provide in-clinic patient care at your primary office each week and fill in at alternate locations as needed for coverage gaps or during peak periods.
  • Conduct structured clinical observations focused on efficiency, diagnosis and treatment, and patient records.
  • Document and share findings from observations to provide timely, actionable coaching remediation plans.
  • Reinforce consistent patient experience and clinical standards across your assigned offices.
  • Reinforce Optometrist scheduling expectations and proactively address gaps in coverage or future staffing needs.
  • Partner with practice Operations leaders to balance exceptional patient care with business performance.
  • Interview candidates for position openings and serve as a clinical ambassador for Optometrist onboarding.
  • Influence Optometrist engagement by building relationships, fostering a culture of belonging, recognition, and accountability as well as connecting day-to-day clinical work to MyEyeDr.'s broader mission and strategy.
  • Mentor Optometrists who are in their early years of practice.

About you
  • Doctor of Optometry (O.D. degree).
  • 5+ years of optometry experience or equivalent breadth across multiple practice environments, with demonstrated leadership through managing, mentoring, or leading clinical initiatives, projects, onboarding, education, or operational improvements showing readiness to guide peers and uphold clinical standards.
  • Broad clinical exposure within optometry, including experience across multiple doctors, locations, or practice modalities (e.g., commercial, private practice, ophthalmology-integrated settings, or multi-site organizations).
  • 2+ years of experience influencing and collaborating with other doctors, including coaching, mentoring, facilitating clinical discussions, or leading doctor meetings or reviews.
  • 2+ years of experience leading end-to-end initiatives, such as clinical process improvements, onboarding programs, chart audits, EHR optimization, or operational quality initiatives.
  • 2+ years of experience using clinical and operational data to influence performance and outcomes across practices.
  • Ability to influence without formal authority, demonstrating leadership through collaboration, credibility, and partnership with doctors and clinical teams.
  • Commitment to integrating clinical care and optical services to enhance the patient experience and practice performance.
  • Proficiency with clinical and operational systems, including EHR, scheduling platforms, and reporting tools (e.g., Eyefinity EHR, Acuity, Encompass; Microsoft Suite of tools including PowerBI; etc.)
  • Strong communication and organizational leadership skills, including the ability to facilitate doctor discussions and promote consistent clinical standards across locations.
  • Ability to travel regionally up to 40% to support observations, coaching, and practice engagement.
