Job description

Part-Time Optometrist – Surgical Ophthalmology

Houston, Texas | Monday & Wednesday Afternoons

Slade & Baker Vision is seeking an experienced, patient-focused Optometrist (OD) to join our ophthalmology practice on a part-time basis. This position is ideal for an optometrist who enjoys working within a surgical and refractive ophthalmology setting and is looking for a consistent two-afternoon-per-week schedule.

Our practice has a strong focus on cataract and refractive surgery, and the Optometrist will work collaboratively with our ophthalmologists and clinical team to provide comprehensive examinations, identify potential surgical candidates, and support patients throughout their surgical care.

Schedule

Monday afternoons

Wednesday afternoons

Approximately two half-days per week. This is a permanent part-time position with the potential for additional coverage opportunities as practice needs evolve.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive ophthalmic examinations
  • Evaluate established patients for changes in vision and ocular health
  • Identify and appropriately refer cataract and refractive surgical candidates
  • Perform pre- and postoperative evaluations within the scope of the position
  • Educate patients regarding cataracts, refractive options, and surgical pathways
  • Evaluate patients presenting for refractive/LASIK screening
  • Diagnose and manage appropriate ocular conditions within the scope of optometric practice
  • Review diagnostic testing and coordinate care with the ophthalmologists
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation
  • Work closely with technicians, surgical counselors, and physicians to provide an efficient patient experience
  • Support the practice's emphasis on excellent patient care and appropriate surgical continuity
Qualifications
  • Doctor of Optometry degree from an accredited institution
  • Current and unrestricted Texas Optometry license
  • Previous experience in an ophthalmology practice strongly preferred
  • Experience with cataract and/or refractive surgery patients preferred
  • Comfortable evaluating patients with cataracts and identifying appropriate surgical candidates
  • Familiarity with pre- and postoperative ophthalmic care
  • Strong clinical judgment and patient-education skills
  • Ability to work efficiently within a high-volume specialty environment
  • Collaborative approach to working with ophthalmologists and clinical staff
Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate understands that a surgical ophthalmology practice differs from a traditional primary-care optometry setting. We are looking for an OD who can provide excellent comprehensive care while recognizing when a patient's visual needs may be better addressed through cataract, LASIK, or other refractive surgical options.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working within an established surgical care model, communicating effectively with patients about their options, and collaborating closely with the surgeons and clinical team.

This position will initially consist of Monday and Wednesday afternoons, with the possibility of expanded hours or transition to a full-time position based on practice growth, patient demand, and mutual fit.
