Opticians Assistant information

What is an opticians assistant?

Opticians Assistants are professionals who support opticians in providing eye care services to customers. They help with tasks such as scheduling appointments, fitting and adjusting eyeglasses, managing inventory, and assisting customers in selecting frames and lenses. Opticians Assistants also handle administrative duties and ensure that the optical practice runs smoothly. Their role is important in delivering quality service and ensuring customer satisfaction within an optical retail environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an opticians assistant?

To thrive as an Opticians Assistant, you need a basic understanding of optical products, attention to detail, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with practice management software, lens measurement tools, and insurance processing systems is typically required. These skills and qualities are essential for ensuring accurate prescriptions, efficient service, and positive patient experiences.

What are some common challenges faced by an opticians assistant, and how can they be managed effectively?

Job Description

The Data Center Technician II supports the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and decommissioning of critical data center infrastructure. In this role, you rack and stack servers, install fiber and copper cabling, assist with hardware upgrades, and diagnose network and server issues. You coordinate with vendors and project teams, maintain accurate documentation and inventory records, and provide mentorship and guidance to junior technicians. This position is ideal for someone with hands-on data center experience, strong technical troubleshooting skills, and familiarity with server and network hardware.

Responsibilities

  • Install, rack, and stack servers and related data center hardware according to technical drawings and rack elevations.
  • Install, terminate, and label fiber optic and copper data cabling, ensuring clean, organized, and standards-compliant cable management.
  • Support hardware upgrades, replacements, and decommissioning activities for servers, network equipment, and related infrastructure.
  • Troubleshoot server, network, and cabling issues using appropriate tools and methods, and resolve incidents efficiently.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, rack elevations, and documentation to plan and execute installations and moves.
  • Coordinate with vendors, facilities teams, and project stakeholders to schedule work, access equipment, and resolve technical issues.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of installations, changes, and decommissions, including inventory records and cabling maps.
  • Use hand tools safely and effectively for construction-related tasks such as mounting equipment, pulling wire, and securing cabling.
  • Support data center facilities maintenance activities related to power, cooling, racks, and infrastructure as needed.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to junior technicians, sharing best practices and ensuring adherence to standards and procedures.
  • Work independently in a rotating schedule, managing tasks, priorities, and timelines with minimal supervision.
  • Follow safety procedures when working with electrical components, low voltage systems, ladders, overhead cable trays, and raised floors.
  • Participate in new construction and refurbishment projects, assisting with build-outs and upgrades of data center spaces.

Required Skills

  • At least 2 years of experience with server racking, fiber and copper cabling, hardware installations, and troubleshooting in a data center or similar environment.
  • Strong technical troubleshooting skills for server, network, and cabling issues.
  • Ability to work independently and manage tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to keep documentation, inventory, and work areas orderly.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, rack elevations, and related documentation.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact with team members, vendors, and project stakeholders.
  • Physical capability to lift up to 50 lbs. and work safely on ladders, overhead cable trays, and raised floors.
  • Experience working with server and network hardware and understanding of data cable installation (copper and fiber optic).
  • Comfort working around electrical and low-voltage systems in a data center environment.
  • Proficiency using common hand tools for installation, construction, and maintenance tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CSTS certification or similar safety or technical credential is a plus.
  • Experience with power and cooling systems in a data center environment.
  • Hands-on experience with racks, cabling infrastructure, and facilities maintenance.
  • Background in new construction or refurbishment projects related to data centers or technical facilities.
  • Familiarity with documenting cabling, rack elevations, and equipment inventories.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a traveling crew and project teams.

Compensation

  • Hourly rate based on skill level and experience
  • $165.00 daily per diem
  • Accommodation provided
  • Flights provided

Why Work Here?

You join a team that values technical excellence, reliability, and collaboration in a dynamic data center environment. The role offers the opportunity to travel with a dedicated crew, with hotels and flights covered, and includes a daily per diem to support living expenses while on assignment. You gain exposure to new construction and refurbishment projects, expanding your skills across power, cooling, racks, and cabling. The project-based nature of the work provides variety and the potential for extended engagement beyond the initial 3–6 month period.

Work Environment

The work environment is primarily on-site in active data centers and construction or refurbishment projects. You work closely with a traveling crew and stay in hotels while on assignment, with travel logistics arranged and covered. The role involves hands-on tasks such as pulling wire, installing data cable (copper and fiber optic), mounting and securing equipment, and working in and around racks, overhead cable trays, and raised floors. You may work in areas where power and cooling systems are being installed or upgraded, and you use common hand tools and equipment typical of data center construction and maintenance.
