As of Sep 10, 2026, the average hourly pay for optical technology in the United States is $21.44, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.35 and $23.32 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is optical technology?

Optical technology refers to the science and application of light and optics, including devices and systems that generate, control, and detect light. This field covers a range of technologies such as lasers, fiber optics, lenses, and imaging systems, which are used in industries like telecommunications, medicine, manufacturing, and research. Optical technology professionals work on designing, testing, and maintaining these systems to ensure they function effectively for applications such as transmitting data, medical diagnostics, or creating high-precision instruments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in optical technology, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Optical Technology often encounter challenges such as keeping pace with rapid technological advancements and troubleshooting complex optical systems. Staying updated through ongoing training and industry certifications can help address the fast-evolving nature of optical tools and techniques. Effective collaboration with interdisciplinary teams—such as engineers, technicians, and researchers—is also essential for problem-solving and innovation. Developing strong communication and project management skills will further support success in this dynamic field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an optical technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Optical Technician, you need a solid understanding of optics principles, lens fabrication, and precision measurement, usually supported by postsecondary training or certification in optical technology. Familiarity with lensometers, spectrometers, polishing machines, and specialized software for lens design is commonly required. Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for ensuring accuracy and collaborating with clients or other technicians. These skills are critical for producing high-quality optical components and maintaining precise standards in vision care or optical manufacturing.

What is the difference between Optical Technology vs Optical Engineering?

AspectOptical TechnologyOptical Engineering
Required CredentialsAssociate's or Bachelor's in optics, physics, or related fieldBachelor's or higher in optical engineering or physics
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, labs, technical supportDesign, development, research in labs or corporate settings
Industry UsageOptical device manufacturing, telecommunications, medical devicesResearch institutions, high-tech companies, product development

Optical Technology focuses on the practical application, assembly, and maintenance of optical devices, while Optical Engineering involves designing and developing optical systems and components. Both roles require a strong understanding of optics but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Are optical engineers in high demand?

Optical engineers are in high demand due to advancements in telecommunications, medical devices, and laser technology. They typically require strong knowledge of optics, photonics, and related tools, and employment opportunities are growing in industries that rely on precise light manipulation and imaging systems.

Is optical technician a good career?

Optical technicians install, maintain, and repair optical equipment such as lenses and laser systems, often working in laboratories or clinics. The role typically requires technical training or certification and offers steady employment with opportunities for specialization. It can be a good career for those interested in technology and healthcare environments.

Job description

Onto Innovation is a leader in process control, combining global scale with an expanded portfolio of leading-edge technologies that include: 3D metrology spanning the chip from nanometer-scale transistors to micron-level die-interconnects; macro defect inspection of wafers and packages; metal interconnect composition; factory analytics; and lithography for advanced semiconductor packaging. Our breadth of offerings across the entire semiconductor value chain helps our customers solve their most difficult yield, device performance, quality, and reliability issues. Onto Innovation strives to optimize customers' critical path of progress by making them smarter, faster and more efficient.
Job Summary & Responsibilities
At Onto Innovation, you will play a key role in developing next-generation optical metrology and inspection systems used in advanced semiconductor manufacturing. As a Staff Optical Engineer, you will lead the design and development of optical subsystems that enable precise measurement of nanometer-scale features in logic and memory devices.
You will contribute to innovations across the full optical stack-from source and illumination design to imaging and detection-supporting AI-driven process control and yield optimization in leading-edge fabs.
  • Lead the design, analysis, and validation of advanced optical systems and modules for semiconductor metrology and inspection
  • Develop optical architectures spanning UV to IR wavelengths, including sources, illumination, imaging optics, and detection strategies
  • Perform optical modeling and simulation (e.g., Zemax, Code V), including tolerancing, stray light analysis, and performance optimization
  • Define specifications and collaborate with external suppliers to develop and qualify optical components and assemblies
  • Drive prototyping, integration, and experimental validation of optical subsystems
  • Develop calibration methodologies and procedures to ensure measurement accuracy and system stability
  • Create documentation, test instructions, and integration workflows to support manufacturing, service, and field applications
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with mechanical, electrical, software, systems, and algorithm teams to deliver fully integrated solutions
  • Provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to optical technology

Qualifications
Required
  • MSc or PhD in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field
  • 7+ years of experience in optical system design and development
  • Proven experience with optical simulation tools such as Zemax or Code V
  • Strong understanding of optical system performance drivers (e.g., aberrations, polarization, scattering, noise, tolerances)
  • Hands-on experience with optical system prototyping, alignment, and testing
  • Experience working in cross-disciplinary engineering teams
  • Proficiency in data analysis and automation using Python or MATLAB
  • Demonstrated ability to own projects, define milestones, and deliver results

Preferred
  • Experience in semiconductor metrology, inspection, or lithography systems
  • Knowledge of advanced optical techniques (e.g., scatterometry, interferometry, ellipsometry, lithography, imaging systems)
  • Experience working with suppliers and managing lens development
  • Familiarity with high-precision calibration and metrology techniques
