What is an optical salary?

An optical salary refers to the average pay or compensation earned by professionals working in the optical industry, such as opticians, optometrists, or optical technicians. Salaries can vary depending on the specific role, level of experience, geographic location, and type of employer. For example, opticians typically earn between $30,000 and $50,000 annually, while optometrists may earn significantly higher salaries. Understanding the optical salary range helps job seekers and employers set expectations and negotiate offers within the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an optician, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Optician, you need strong knowledge of optical science, eye anatomy, and lens technology, typically supported by an associate degree or optician certification. Familiarity with lensometers, pupilometers, and electronic medical record (EMR) systems is commonly required. Excellent customer service, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help opticians build trust and accurately fulfill prescriptions. These skills ensure precise vision correction, customer satisfaction, and compliance with healthcare standards.

What are the typical career advancement opportunities for someone working in an optical sales role?

Professionals in optical sales often begin as sales associates or opticians and can progress to roles such as store manager, optical sales manager, or regional sales supervisor. Advancement is typically based on performance, sales achievements, and additional certifications in optics or management. Many companies also offer training programs that support career growth into areas like optical lab management or business development. Collaboration with optometrists and other healthcare professionals can also open doors to broader roles within the optical or healthcare industry.

What is the difference between Optical Salary vs Optical Technician?

AspectOptical SalaryOptical Technician
Required CredentialsTypically none or minimal, often includes basic optical knowledgeHigh school diploma; certification or training in optical technology often preferred
Work EnvironmentAdministrative, sales, or management settings in optical retail or healthcareLaboratory, retail optical stores, or healthcare facilities
Industry UsageUsed in salary discussions, compensation analysis, and job postingsCommonly used in job titles, roles, and daily work descriptions

Optical Salary refers to compensation figures related to roles in the optical industry, often used in salary surveys and job postings. Optical Technician is a hands-on role involving the fabrication, adjustment, and repair of optical devices. While both are connected to the optical industry, Optical Salary focuses on pay data, whereas Optical Technician describes a specific job function.

Is a licensed optician a good career?

A licensed optician is a viable career option, involving fitting and dispensing eyeglasses and contact lenses, often requiring certification or licensing. The profession offers stable employment opportunities in retail, healthcare, and specialized practices, with a typical work schedule and the need for good customer service skills.

Job Description:ย Dynamics Analyst (GN&C/ACS/Controls/LOS/Jitter)

L3Harris is seeking a highly skilled Dynamics Analyst to perform design, analysis, modeling, and testing of high-performance controls for electro-mechanical and optical-mechanical systems with focus on Attitude Control Systems, Controls, LOS/Jitter, and/or dynamic testing.ย  The analyst will use their experience to model, analyze and simulate dynamic systems, utilizing methodologies for a variety of dynamic systems, but with a primary focus on system-level interdisciplinary electro-mechanical optical systems. This includes, but is not limited to, actuated optical systems, high bandwidth steering mirror control, multidisciplinary system modeling and characterization, image stabilization, and closed loop state estimation.

Job responsibilities include:

  • Control Theory: Applying classical and modern control theory concepts such as stability, feedback control, and robustness. Utilizing analysis tools like Bode, Nyquist, Nichols, pole-zero plots, root-locus, and frequency-response analysis.
  • Control Systems: Conducting analysis, synthesis, development, and implementation of feedback control systems. This includes developing models as state-variable equations, transfer functions, and/or block diagrams to determine dynamic systems characteristics, and analyzing both time and frequency responses.
  • Structural Dynamics and Vibration Analysis: Performing structural dynamics and vibration analysis, including random vibration and acoustic analysis, design, measurement, and computation of multi-degree-of-freedom systems.
  • Computational Methods: Employing finite-element-based computational methods, dynamic testing methods, and modal analysis (both analytical and experimental).
  • Optical Performance Analysis: Evaluating system-level optical performance related to pointing, smear, and jitter.
  • Digital Signal Processing: Applying fundamental concepts and techniques of digital signal processing theory and its applications, including discrete-time signals, systems, and modern digital processing algorithms for both time-domain and frequency-domain methods.

Essential Functions:

  • Model control systems as part of larger system simulations for electro-mechanical and opto-mechanical hardware
  • Line-of-sight (LOS) control, attitude control, servo control, Kalman filtering
  • Algorithm development, implementation, flight software development, mission simulation, verification and validation
  • Multidisciplinary (hardware, electronics, and software) integrated system development and operation
  • Dynamic stabilization\isolation, passive vibration control, active vibration control
  • Model characterization and performance predictions\evaluations
  • Modal\Random Vibration\Acoustic\Shock model predictions, testing and correlation
  • Definition and documentation of system specifications
