What does an optical deployment engineer do?

An Optical Deployment Engineer is responsible for planning, designing, and implementing optical fiber networks that transmit data over long distances. Their work involves assessing network requirements, selecting appropriate optical equipment, and overseeing the installation and testing of fiber optic infrastructure. They ensure that the optical network meets performance standards and troubleshoot issues related to signal quality or connectivity. This role is essential in supporting high-speed internet, telecommunications, and data center operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an optical deployment engineer?

To thrive as an Optical Deployment Engineer, you need strong knowledge of optical networking principles, fiber optic technologies, and a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Experience with design and simulation tools (such as OptiSystem or Visio), familiarity with DWDM/CWDM systems, and relevant certifications like Cisco CCNA or FOA CFOT are typically required. Excellent problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you coordinate deployments and troubleshoot complex issues. These competencies are crucial for ensuring reliable, high-performance optical networks and successful project delivery.

What are some common challenges optical deployment engineers face when working on large-scale network projects?

Optical Deployment Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple stakeholders, managing tight project timelines, and troubleshooting unforeseen issues during fiber installation or equipment deployment. Working on large-scale projects may require adapting to changing site conditions and ensuring that all installations meet rigorous safety and quality standards. Effective communication and collaboration with construction teams, network planners, and vendors are essential for overcoming these challenges and ensuring successful project delivery.

What is the difference between Optical Deployment Engineer vs Fiber Optic Technician?

Job description

Hardware Operations Engineer - Baseball
Reports to: Hardware Operations Manager
Contract: Fullโ€‘Time, 12-Month Fixed Term
Location: Atlanta, GA; extensive travel across venues
Travel expectation: Approximately 50% during season; up to 80% during install season
Role Overview
The Hardware Operations Engineer is a development technical role within the combined Hardware Operations team. This role supports onsite installation work, onsite maintenance and repair, remote hardware monitoring, first-line troubleshooting, hardware QA checks, kit preparation, spares/RMA coordination, and handover support across Hawk-Eye and KinaTrax Baseball systems.
The role is designed as the primary development pathway into the Hardware Operations Lead role. Engineers build technical depth through a blend of remote diagnostics, onsite troubleshooting, installation support, preventative maintenance, kit builds, and shadowing Leads on complex hardware work.
This role is expected to become increasingly hands-on and technically capable over time. It is not a purely remote coordination role.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Field Service & Installation: Travel to stadiums to support complex onsite installations, maintenance, repairs, and hardware QA for both Hawk-Eye and KinaTrax Baseball systems.
  • Hardware Diagnostics: Perform rigorous hardware checks across cameras, servers, networking equipment, power systems, and cabling.
  • Incident Response: Act as the first line of defense for hardware troubleshooting. You'll identify failed components, swap parts onsite, coordinate RMAs, and validate system recovery.
  • Remote Monitoring: When you aren't at the ballpark, you'll monitor system health checks, assist with remote troubleshooting, and prep offline kits in the warehouse.
  • Team Collaboration: Work closely with Hardware Leads, Systems Engineering, TechOps, and Project Management to provide field evidence, escalate complex issues, and improve our hardware deployment standards.
  • Continuous Growth: Shadow our Leads on complex technical work, learning how to distinguish between standard field issues and deeper design-level challenges.

Note: This is a highly practical, hands-on hardware role. It is not a purely remote coordination desk job, nor is it a software deployment, project management, or systems architecture role.
What We Need From You
  • Technical Experience: 1+ years in hardware support, IT operations, field service, broadcast tech, or sports technology.
  • Hardware Fundamentals: A solid basic understanding of camera systems, servers, network switches, IP addressing, power systems, and cabling.
  • Hands-On Mentality: You are totally comfortable working in a mix of environments from warehouses and labs to live MLB stadiums.
  • Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to follow technical procedures, troubleshoot methodically, document findings clearly (with photos and evidence), and know exactly when to escalate an issue.
  • Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate seamlessly with both highly technical engineering teams and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Willingness to Travel: A readiness to travel extensively (up to 80% during peak installation windows).

Bonus Points If You Have
  • Previous experience with Hawk-Eye, KinaTrax, optical tracking, biomechanics, or live broadcast environments.
  • An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, IT, Networking, or Electronics.
  • Familiarity with hardware monitoring tools, diagnostic dashboards, or IT support ticketing systems.

Team Culture
At Hawk-Eye, we pride ourselves on a collaborative, high-performance culture where trust, passion, and innovation thrive. We believe in fostering an environment where every team member is empowered to push boundaries and contribute to the future of sports technology. Our work is guided by three core values:
  • We are Brave: We challenge the status quo, embrace big ideas, and constantly seek new ways to innovate in the sports entertainment industry. We aren't afraid to take risks in pursuit of excellence.
  • We are Owners: We take personal accountability for our work, our decisions, and our collective success. We celebrate our wins together and treat every challenge as an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve.
  • We are Inclusive: We believe our diversity makes us stronger. We cultivate a welcoming environment where unique perspectives are valued, all while being united by our shared love for sports and technology.
