Job description

Eaton’s Distributed IT division is seeking a Senior Design Engineer to lead the development and enhancement of Data Center Hot Aisle Containment (HAC) solutions. This role is based on site in Worcester, MA.

This technical leadership role is responsible for product architecture, mechanical design, testing, validation, and continuous improvement of modular containment systems that optimize data center thermal performance, scalability, and manufacturability.

The expected annual salary range for this role is $86,000 - $126,000 a year. Please note the salary information shown above is a general guideline only. Salaries are based upon candidate skills, experience, and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

What you'll do:
  • Lead development of new Hot Aisle Containment product platforms through Eaton’s structured NPD process.
  • Design and validate structural and sheet metal containment systems, including doors, panels, support structures, and mounting interfaces.
  • Create 3D CAD models and production drawings (Creo preferred).
  • Perform engineering analysis, including structural calculations, FEA, and CFD.
  • Define and execute verification and validation testing to ensure performance and compliance.
  • Partner with Product Management, Sales, Manufacturing, Suppliers, and Customers to deliver innovative, cost-effective solutions.
  • Drive product standardization, quality improvements, modularization, and cost-reduction initiatives.
This role could be the next step in your career if you demonstrate the following experience:
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) from an accredited institution with minimum of 3+ years of relevant experience OR Associate’s degree with advanced technical training and 10+ years of relevant experience.
You will set yourself apart by demonstrating some or all the following:
  • Proficiency in 3D parametric CAD modeling (Creo/Pro E strongly preferred).
  • Direct experience designing Data Center Hot Aisle Containment systems, including support structures, doors, panels, and sealing solutions.
  • Experience integrating containment solutions with racks, power, overhead cable trays, and cooling infrastructure.
  • Strong background in structural steel and sheet metal design, including load path analysis and connection design.
  • Experience with building-mounted and freestanding containment systems.
  • Knowledge of seismic, wind, and code-driven loading requirements for data center structures.
  • Familiarity with sheet metal fabrication, welding, fastener selection, and other manufacturing processes.
  • Experience interpreting architectural, structural, and MEP drawings.
  • Understanding of lean manufacturing principles and supplier collaboration.
Position Success Criteria:
  • Proven experience designing Hot Aisle Containment or related data center infrastructure products.
  • Experience leading engineered product development using a structured phase-gate methodology.
  • Knowledge of DFMEA, DFMA, Design for Six Sigma, QFD, Voice of Customer, and ISO 9001 quality systems.
  • Ability to translate customer requirements into scalable, manufacturable designs.
  • Strong project leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
