THE POSITION

As a PennDOT CDL Operator Trainee with the Department of Transportation, you can begin a hands-on career that teaches essential skills for road maintenance. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This trainee position provides guided training in equipment operation, safety practices, and maintenance skills needed for highway and bridge work. It helps prepare you for certification and supports safe and efficient maintenance operations across the county. As a PennDOT CDL Operator Trainee, you will perform the following duties:

  • Equipment Training: Learn to operate heavy trucks and loaders and perform required pre and post operation checks
  • Manual Labor: Perform tasks using hand and power tools including shovels, rakes, chain saws and mowers
  • Safety Practices: Follow safety procedures, report injuries or incidents, and maintain awareness of hazards
  • Field Adjustments: Make basic adjustments to equipment and assist mechanics with minor repairs
  • Environmental Duties: Follow environmental guidelines and participate in required environmental training

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $42,437 (before taxes).

QUALIFICATIONS

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania non-commercial Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
  • All employees must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver Learner's Permit on the first day of work.
  • All positions require employees to possess an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations by the first day of work.


Additional Requirements:

  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
