The Substation Electrical Engineering Intern will join a substation engineering team designing new and upgraded substations for public and private electric utility clients. Projects range from relay and protection upgrades at existing facilities to full electrical design packages for new transmission and distribution substations. This position offers a direct opportunity to apply electrical engineering coursework to the equipment, protection, and control systems that keep the electric grid running reliably.
As an Electrical Substation Intern, the selected candidate will learn to apply industry standards, including IEEE, NESC, and NEC, in the development of one-line diagrams, protection and control schematics, and equipment specifications. The intern will assist Senior Engineers with power system studies and equipment selection, gaining exposure to the full lifecycle of substation design from concept through construction support.
Requirements
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist engineers in the preparation of substation one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, and protection and control schematics.
  • Support the development of equipment specifications, bills of material, and construction drawings for substation design projects.
  • Assist with power system studies, including short circuit, protective relay coordination, and grounding grid analyses.
  • Help prepare physical layout and structural drawings for substation equipment, including transformers, breakers, and switchgear.
  • Coordinate with civil, structural, and other design disciplines to support integrated substation design packages.
  • Travel to substation project sites as necessary to gather field data and support commissioning or construction activities.

Required Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled in an ABET-accredited undergraduate Electrical Engineering program.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, management, and design team members.
  • Willingness to learn in a flexible, cross-disciplinary work environment.
  • Willingness to attend site visits and perform work in outdoor field conditions on occasion, including within energized substation environments under supervision.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:
The following qualifications are preferred but not required for consideration:
  • Relevant industry experience through engineering coursework projects or prior internships in substation, power systems, or electrical engineering.
  • Experience with technical design software including AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, SKM, ETAP, or CYME.
