Job description

Operating Room Technician

Duties: Job Summary: Under general direction, observes and practices sterile technique, maintains asepsis, anticipates and assists the surgeon as needed. Actively participates in patient care and safety. Utilizes OR supplies conservatively and operates as a team member of the OR staff.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Follows Infection Control policies and procedures and demonstrates expertise in surgical scrub technique.
  • Adheres to principles of sterile technique preoperatively and intra-operatively.
  • Assists the surgeon when needed gowning, gloving, draping, and passing of instruments and other related items during the procedure. Anticipates the surgeon's need for instruments, sutures, and equipment.
  • Maintains an organized operative field at all times by keeping the instruments clean and in their proper place.
  • Keeps an accurate sponge, tape, needle, dissector, and instrument count.
  • Prepares for cases by assembling supplies and equipment in accordance with preference cards and identifies conflicts or problems. Cares appropriately for instruments and supplies after each case.
  • Provides a safe surgical environment for the patient, identifying potential hazards to the surgeon, RN and assisting RN circulator in preoperative checks of equipment.
  • Displays knowledge of potential hazards (equipment, chemical, or gases) within the Operating Room.
  • Utilizes experienced OR staff as a resource, and acts as a resource for new OR personnel.
  • Assists in suturing, retracting, suctioning under direction of the surgeon.
  • Handles and identifies specimens per policy.
  • Expedites the effective and efficient turn-over of the OR between cases.
  • Takes rotating call duty.
  • Will perform additional responsibilities, as requested.

Skills: Required Skills & Experience: N/A Preferred Skills & Experience: Previous Operating Room experience. Previous Surgical Technologist experience.

Education: Required Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Required Certifications & Licensure: NBSTSA - Certified Surgical Technologist (CST). BLS Certification (AHA, HSI, or American Red Cross).

Schedule Notes: General OR Work Hours: Either 5, 8 hour shifts, or 4, 10 hour shifts with a daily shift end time of 11:30pm (3p-11:30p, or 1p-11:30p) Call Hours: One weekend every 3 to 4 weeks (This is Saturday and Sunday, again evening shift hours ending at 11:30p) 1-to-2-night call shifts per week (11:30p-7a) Shift after shift worked on scheduled weekend.
