About this opportunity:
Cenovus Energy is seeking a Relief Valve & Relief Systems Technical Authority based in our Ohio refineries to support downstream operations, with emphasis on our Ohio refineries. This role leads pressure relief device training, oversees the relief systems technical assurance program, and supports sites through risk reviews, HAZOPs, and technical consultations. The position also focuses on building organizational capability through mentorship and training. Experience in process design and front-end project development is a strong asset.
What you'll do:
  • Serve as the Relief Valve Technical Authority, providing expert pressure relief engineering support across downstream sites.
  • Support projects and operations through technical reviews, troubleshooting, and approval of relief device sizing and system calculations, setting and implementing engineering technical practices, and drive integrated, pragmatic solutions focused on risk management, operating efficiency, defect elimination and standardization.
  • Lead the development and maintenance of training and technical assurance programs for pressure relief sizing and downstream systems.
  • Evaluate and approve API 520/521 and flare system design exceptions, overseeing the exception-approval process at each site.
  • Participate, on an as-needed basis, in HAZOPs, flare risk assessments, and investigations to support safe and reliable operations.
  • Standardize and guide the creation of technical documentation for pressure relief and flare disposal systems.
  • Collaborate regularly with operations, maintenance, inspection, and other SMEs to ensure consistent technical practices
Who you are:
  • Legally authorized to work in the US
  • Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • 8+ years of experience with refining, upstream, or petrochemical domain, with at least 3+ years of design experience in relief systems. Expert or specialized knowledge of relief valve calculations and relief systems is mandatory. Lesser experience may be considered if the experience is more concentrated on Relief systems and flares.
  • Working knowledge of pressure relief device sizing, selection, and disposal systems; experience with relief system calculations
  • Good working knowledge of process simulation tools such as PetroSim, HYSYS, PRO-II, or Aspen Flare Analyzer, AFT Fathom, etc.
  • Understanding of core process engineering deliverables (PFDs, P&IDs, heat and material balances, hydraulic calculations, overpressure scenarios).
  • Strong knowledge of relevant industry standards (e.g., API 520/521, API RP 576) with willingness to deepen expertise.
  • Experience with front-end project development and equipment design.
  • Strong technical communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across operations, maintenance, and engineering teams.
