Where do Operating Engineers make the most money?

Operating Engineers tend to earn the highest salaries in regions with high construction activity, such as large metropolitan areas and states with significant infrastructure projects. Factors like experience, certifications, and specialization in heavy equipment or power systems can also influence earning potential.

What are Operating Engineers?

Operating Engineers are skilled professionals who operate and maintain heavy machinery and equipment, such as cranes, bulldozers, excavators, and loaders, commonly used on construction sites and in other industrial settings. They are responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of this equipment, performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting issues, and sometimes assisting with repairs. Operating Engineers play a critical role in the successful completion of construction and infrastructure projects by helping move materials, clear land, and perform tasks that require mechanical power.

What engineers make $500,000?

Highly experienced and specialized engineers, such as senior petroleum engineers, aerospace engineers, or software engineers in senior or executive roles, can earn $500,000 or more annually. These roles often require advanced skills, certifications, and extensive industry experience, and compensation may include bonuses and stock options.

What does an operations engineer do?

An operations engineer is responsible for managing and maintaining the systems, equipment, and infrastructure within an organization to ensure smooth and efficient operations. They often troubleshoot technical issues, optimize processes, and may work with tools like automation software or monitoring systems. The role typically requires technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and relevant certifications or experience in engineering or operations management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Operating Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Operating Engineer, you need expertise in operating, maintaining, and repairing complex machinery, often backed by a high school diploma, technical training, and relevant licenses or certifications. Familiarity with control systems, heavy equipment, and safety protocols—such as OSHA standards—is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure safe, efficient operation of equipment, minimize downtime, and help maintain a secure work environment.

What is the difference between Operating Engineer vs Maintenance Technician?

AspectOperating EngineerMaintenance Technician
CredentialsOSHA certifications, state licenses, technical trainingOSHA certifications, technical/vocational training
Work EnvironmentIndustrial plants, power plants, large facilitiesBuildings, manufacturing plants, facilities maintenance
Employer & IndustryConstruction, utilities, manufacturingFacilities management, manufacturing, commercial buildings

Operating Engineers and Maintenance Technicians often share certifications and work in industrial or large facility environments. Operating Engineers focus on operating and maintaining heavy machinery and equipment, while Maintenance Technicians handle repairs and preventive maintenance of building systems. Both roles are essential for facility operations, but their specific duties and focus areas differ.

What are some common challenges Operating Engineers face when managing multiple pieces of equipment on a job site?

Operating Engineers often juggle the operation and maintenance of several types of heavy machinery, such as cranes, bulldozers, and excavators, which requires strong multitasking and organizational skills. A common challenge is coordinating equipment use efficiently to avoid downtime and bottlenecks, particularly on busy construction sites with tight schedules. Additionally, they must remain vigilant about safety protocols and equipment inspections to prevent accidents or mechanical failures. Effective communication with site supervisors and other team members is crucial to ensure a smooth workflow and address any issues promptly.

Job description

As a Senior DevOps Engineer, you will be a key technical contributor responsible for designing, implementing, and operating scalable, resilient infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines that support the full software development lifecycle. You will work closely with Wolters Kluwer Product Teams to embed DevOps best practices into agile workflows, enabling continuous integration, automated testing, and reliable deployment across environments.

In this role, you will focus on handson engineering excellence-building, automating, and operating cloudnative platforms that improve system reliability, performance, and maintainability. You will partner closely with application development teams to bridge development and operations, supporting microservices, containerized workloads, and cloudnative architectures. While not a formal people manager, you will act as a senior technical mentor and role model, promoting engineering rigor, codeasinfrastructure, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Design, engineer, and automate secure, scalable cloud infrastructure in Azure and AWS using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform, Ansible, and Jenkins, applying software engineering best practices including modular design, version control, and automated testing.
  • Implement and maintain Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD pipelines, contributing reusable modules, templates, and patterns that improve consistency and reliability across teams.
  • Design and implement modern compute platforms, including containerized and serverless solutions (AKS, EKS, Docker, Azure Functions), with an emphasis on scalability, maintainability, and performance.
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines as software products, ensuring strong test coverage, artifact management, promotion workflows, and deployment automation across multiple environments.
  • Support and evolve cloudnative architectures, applying engineering principles such as abstraction, decoupling, fault isolation, and observability.
  • Implement observability solutions using metrics, logging, and tracing to enable proactive issue detection, faster troubleshooting, and root cause analysis.
  • Ensure infrastructure and automation solutions comply with enterprise DevOps, security, and compliance standards, contributing to architectural reviews and governance processes.
  • Serve as a senior technical mentor, providing guidance through code reviews, design discussions, and knowledge sharing-without direct people management responsibilities.
  • Evaluate and prototype emerging tools and technologies, applying engineering rigor to assess value, performance, and integration feasibility.
  • Apply Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices such as SLIs/SLOs, error budgets, capacity planning, and incident response to improve system reliability and reduce operational toil.
  • Deploy, operate, and support businesscritical applications, ensuring high availability, fault tolerance, and performance optimization.
  • Participate in modernization initiatives, supporting the rearchitecture and cloudnative transformation of legacy platforms.
  • Identify and remediate engineering inefficiencies by proposing and implementing automation and architectural improvements.
  • Participate in postincident reviews, contributing to blameless root cause analysis and longterm corrective actions.
  • Participate in oncall rotations, continuously improving alert quality, reducing noise, and automating remediation where possible.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in DevOps, Site Reliability Engineering, Release Engineering, or related roles, with strong handson software engineering experience.
  • Strong background in software development, with experience in languages such as Python, .NET, or Java.
  • Proven experience working with cloud platforms (Azure and AWS).
  • Proficiency in scripting languages such as PowerShell and Bash.
  • Solid understanding of core Azure and AWS services (PaaS, IaaS, SaaS).
  • Strong experience with source control and automation tools, including Git.
  • Handson experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
  • Experience building and operating CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Azure DevOps, Jenkins, or similar platforms.
  • Strong problemsolving skills with attention to detail and operational excellence.
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical concepts to engineers and nonengineering stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated commitment to DevOps culture, including continuous integration, automated testing, deployment automation, and full lifecycle ownership.
  • Experience building or supporting observability platforms and defining operational best practices.
  • Experience troubleshooting and automating diagnostics across Linux and Windows environments.
