What is an open source intelligence?

An Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) job involves collecting, analyzing, and interpreting publicly available data to support decision-making in cybersecurity, law enforcement, business, or government operations. OSINT analysts gather information from sources like social media, news articles, public records, and databases to identify threats, trends, or insights. These professionals use various tools and techniques to verify and contextualize data while adhering to ethical and legal guidelines. The role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of data privacy laws to ensure responsible use of information.

What are some typical challenges faced by professionals in open source intelligence?

Professionals working in Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) commonly face challenges such as information overload, verifying the credibility of sources, and navigating rapidly evolving digital platforms. They must also stay current with legal and ethical considerations when collecting and analyzing publicly available data. Collaboration with cybersecurity, law enforcement, or intelligence teams is frequent to ensure findings are integrated effectively. Developing efficient research strategies and maintaining a critical mindset are key to overcoming these obstacles and delivering actionable intelligence in a timely manner.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in open source intelligence?

To thrive in Open Source Intelligence (OSINT), you need strong analytical skills, a deep understanding of internet research techniques, and familiarity with information verification, often supported by degrees in fields such as criminal justice, cybersecurity, or intelligence studies. Experience with specialized OSINT tools like Maltego, Recon-ng, and knowledge of data privacy legislation are highly valued, as are certifications such as GIAC Open Source Intelligence (GOSI). Attention to detail, ethical integrity, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for interpreting and reporting findings clearly. These skills are important because they ensure the accurate, lawful, and actionable gathering of data from open sources to support security, investigative, or decision-making objectives.

Job description

Are you passionate about protecting high-profile individuals, organizations, and the public from online threats and targeted violence? Do you have experience in OSINT investigations or intelligence analysis, gained within a government agency, fusion center, law enforcement body, corporate or executive security function, GSOC, or a comparable intelligence background?

Moonshot is recruiting an Intelligence Analyst to join our threat monitoring team. In this role, you will conduct daily monitoring and OSINT investigations into online threats, lead the development of risk assessments, provide expert guidance to clients, and contribute to producing high quality, actionable insights.

You will work across the full intelligence cycle. This includes defining intelligence requirements, conducting ongoing monitoring across client accounts, and running discrete digital investigations into specific incidents. The role requires you to meet a dynamic set of client needs and think creatively, distilling large volumes of social media and open source data into clear, actionable analysis for a range of stakeholders. As part of a growing team, you will also help identify ways to improve our investigative processes and methodology.

Candidates must be based in MA, CO, NY, VA, GA, PA, MD, WI, TN, OR, NJ, or DC. Occasional travel may be required.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct daily monitoring and OSINT investigations into a range of online harms, including impersonation, stalking, NCII/deepfake content, doxxing, and threat attribution.
  • Lead the development of risk assessments and threat classifications, ensuring judgments are precise, evidence based, and relevant to client needs.
  • Distill large volumes of social media and open source data into clear, actionable analysis.
  • Develop reports and briefings tailored to client requirements.
  • Escalate high priority threats promptly, supporting communication with platform trust and safety contacts, legal teams, and law enforcement partners where appropriate.
  • Manage a demanding reporting schedule across multiple concurrent accounts, balancing time, scope, and quality.
  • Contribute to the evolution of Moonshot's investigative methodology and tools.

Requirements

Essential:

  • Professional experience conducting OSINT investigations or intelligence analysis, gained within a government agency, fusion center, law enforcement body, corporate or executive security function, GSOC, or a comparable intelligence background.
  • Strong OSINT skills and social media investigation experience, with the ability to work independently through large, messy datasets.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the intelligence cycle, including defining requirements, building a collection plan, and producing analysis from it.
  • Sound judgment on threat credibility, able to assess risk based on intent and capability rather than volume of activity alone.
  • Ability to manage competing deadlines and shifting priorities across multiple accounts without sacrificing quality.
  • Strong problem solving skills, comfortable working through ambiguous or incomplete information to reach a sound conclusion.
  • Strong written communication skills, with the ability to translate findings into clear, actionable outputs.
  • Track record of producing investigative or intelligence products for internal or client stakeholders.
  • Comfortable regularly reviewing sensitive and potentially distressing content, including material related to violence, abuse, or exploitation.
  • Strong collaborator, able to work well within a team and build trust with colleagues and clients alike.
  • This role suits someone ready to work independently day to day, rather than someone overseeing a team or a full client portfolio.
  • Willingness to occasionally be on call and work outside regular hours for urgent client needs or special events.
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the US, and will be required to undertake and pass a standard background check, along with any relevant security clearance procedures per client needs.

Desirable:

  • Experience using AI tools to support research or writing workflows, or a strong interest in learning to do so.

Benefits

  • 15 days paid vacation leave, plus Federal holidays and 1 day additional paid leave for Native American Heritage Day.
  • Flexible public holiday policy with the option to work federal holidays in exchange for a day off at another time.
  • Full private healthcare package, including coverage for partners and children.
  • Dental & Vision Insurance.
  • Life & Disability Insurance.
  • 24/7 access to free counseling via our Employee Assistance Program.
  • 3% matched 401k contributions.
  • 401(k) Roth Contributions.
  • Generous maternity and paternity leave: 26 weeks paid maternity leave, 8 weeks paid paternity leave.
  • All permanent employees are granted share options upon employment.

Salary: $50,000 - $57,000 (depending on skills and experience).
