Job description

If you are ready to change the world and protect the protectors, the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) currently has an IMMEDIATE opportunity for a Health and Safety Specialist to work in the IAFF Health and Safety Operational Services Department.


This is a non-exempt, full-time position (32.5-hour work week) with office assignment at the Headquarters of the International Association of Fire Fighters in Washington D.C. Position Summary:

Provides evidence-based health & safety guidance and assistance to IAFF Local affiliates through program development, implementation strategy, and administration, provides technical assistance to partner fire service agencies and consensus standards organizations, and creates resources to improve fire fighter health & safety based on surveillance and intelligence gathering that identifies trends requiring the IAFF’s attention.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides evidence-based health & safety guidance and assistance to IAFF affiliates and members 
  • Develop, implement, and administer programs that address fire fighter health & safety
  • Produce educational resources to provide information to consensus standards organizations by representing the IAFF at National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), International Codes Council (ICC), Canadian Standards Association (CSA), and Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) committee meetings
  • Participate as an IAFF representative to NFPA, ICC, CSA, and OSHA committees
  • Produce health & safety resources, based on surveillance and intelligence gathering, on fire fighter health, safety and wellness priorities
  • Present about IAFF health and safety resources, programs, & priorities
  • Attend meetings and conferences to represent the IAFF and advocate for the health and safety of fire fighters
  • Assist IAFF Governmental Affairs with IAFF’s efforts in pursuit of fire fighter health and safety legislation
  • Collaborate with internal IAFF staff and external fire service partners to advance IAFF efforts on issues related to the health, safety, & wellness of fire fighters
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders to develop IAFF position papers, safety alerts and information bulletins on health and safety issues.
  • Submit and maintain copyright protections for Health and Safety classes.
  • Assist with the administration of the IAFF CPAT Program.
  • Assist as needed with the preparation and submission of PSOB claims.
  • Other duties as assigned by the AGP of Health and Safety

Skills:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Health, Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health or related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ relevant work experience
  • Knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and National Fire Protection Administration (NFPA) standards
  • Knowledge of emerging trends impacting fire fighter health, safety, and wellness
