What is an online professor?

An online professor teaches courses at a college or a university in a specific subject. But instead of working in the classroom and speaking to students in person, an online professor presents lectures and course curriculum through virtual classes. Some may be live streamed, where students can interact directly with the professor in real time. Other courses may be recorded for students to watch at their own pace, but students may e-mail questions to the professor. As an online professor, your job duties consist of developing courses, creating lessons, giving lectures, advising students, and grading coursework. Other responsibilities include staying current in your field by performing research, reading academic materials, and attending conferences.

What does an online professor do?

Online professors use a variety of digital tools and teaching strategies to foster student engagement and provide support. This often includes hosting live video lectures, moderating discussion boards, and offering prompt feedback on assignments. Many online professors hold virtual office hours to answer questions and provide one-on-one guidance. Building a strong online presence and maintaining clear, consistent communication are key to helping students feel connected and supported throughout the course.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an online professor?
