An online professor teaches courses at a college or a university in a specific subject. But instead of working in the classroom and speaking to students in person, an online professor presents lectures and course curriculum through virtual classes. Some may be live streamed, where students can interact directly with the professor in real time. Other courses may be recorded for students to watch at their own pace, but students may e-mail questions to the professor. As an online professor, your job duties consist of developing courses, creating lessons, giving lectures, advising students, and grading coursework. Other responsibilities include staying current in your field by performing research, reading academic materials, and attending conferences.
| Aspect | Online Professor | Online Tutor |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Typically requires a master's or doctoral degree in the subject area | May require a bachelor's degree; certifications vary |
| Work Environment | Usually employed by colleges or universities, delivering courses online | Often works independently or for tutoring platforms, providing one-on-one or small group sessions |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Academic institutions, universities, colleges | Online tutoring platforms, private clients, educational companies |
Online Professors generally hold advanced degrees and teach university-level courses, often within formal academic institutions. Online Tutors typically have less formal credentials and focus on personalized tutoring sessions. Both roles involve online teaching, but the scope, credentials, and employer types differ significantly.
