What is an online math tutor text based?

An online math tutor (text based) is an educator who helps students learn and understand math concepts through written communication, such as chat or messaging platforms. Unlike video or voice tutoring, all interactions occur via typed messages, allowing students to ask questions and receive explanations in real time or asynchronously. This method is flexible, convenient, and can be particularly helpful for students who prefer written instruction or need help outside of traditional classroom hours.

How do online math tutors effectively engage students in a text-based environment without face-to-face interaction?

Online math tutors working in a text-based setting often use a variety of interactive tools, such as shared digital whiteboards, step-by-step problem-solving, and timely, personalized feedback to keep students engaged. Clear communication, patience, and the ability to break down complex concepts into simpler parts are key. Tutors also regularly check for understanding by asking students to explain their reasoning or walk through similar problems independently. Building rapport and trust through written communication can be a unique challenge, but it's achieved through encouragement, responsiveness, and adapting to each student’s learning style.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an online math tutor text based, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Online Math Tutor (Text Based), a solid grasp of mathematics, strong problem-solving skills, and at least a bachelor's degree or relevant teaching certification are typically required. Familiarity with online communication platforms, digital whiteboards, and learning management systems is essential for effective instruction. Exceptional written communication, patience, and the ability to motivate and adapt to diverse learners are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure tutors can explain complex concepts clearly, engage students remotely, and foster student success in a virtual environment.

Job description

Union College invites applications for the tenure-track Donald C. Brate '45-Stanley G. Peschel '52 Assistant Professorship in Statistics at the rank of Assistant Professor (appointments with a shortened tenure clock may be considered in exceptional cases for experienced candidates once a job offer is made), beginning September 1, 2027. Applications received by September 15, 2026 will receive full consideration.
At Union, institutional expectations and support are balanced between teaching and research; candidates should demonstrate excellence in both areas. The position is open to candidates who will have a Ph.D. in statistics by September 2027, who have strong teaching credentials in undergraduate statistics, and have a record of scholarly achievement that suggests a continuing commitment to scholarship in any sub-fields within statistics.
This position will play a key role in our growing Statistics, Data Analytics, and Financial & Actuarial Mathematics programs. Union currently has established minors in these three programs. The long-term goal is to grow these programs to majors. While a strong theoretical background in statistics is required, candidates who also have practical experience in addressing real problems with statistics, and who can teach practical statistical thinking and analysis of data for a specific purpose and within a specific context, are particularly desired. The teaching load is two courses per trimester with one course release during the first year.
The successful hire will develop courses in their area of expertise that may contribute to other programs at Union, especially the interdisciplinary programs in Data Analytics and Financial & Actuarial Mathematics.
About the Department of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics is dedicated to helping students develop their abilities to reason logically, understand abstract concepts, and solve complex problems, while equipping them with the skills needed for advanced studies in mathematics. In addition to our own programs in mathematics, statistics, and financial and actuarial mathematics, our curriculum supports the College's academic offerings in the natural and social sciences, engineering, and interdisciplinary studies.
Our department takes great pride in its commitment to excellence in both teaching and scholarly activity. Our faculty engage in research across a wide range of fields, contributing to both academic knowledge and student learning. We particularly welcome applications from groups that have been traditionally underrepresented in statistics.
Application Instructions
Please submit the following materials online at Mathjobs.org.
  • Cover letter.
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • Research Statement. Please also describe how you will conduct your research at an undergraduate institution, and, if applicable, share any ideas for potentially involving undergraduate students in that work.
  • Teaching Statement. We also welcome evidence of teaching effectiveness, such as successful outcomes in student learning, feedback from peers or mentors, and other relevant information. Please convey how your teaching, mentorship, and/or community service will support Union's commitment to inclusion. This should include your strategies for creating an inclusive classroom environment for all students.

Candidates selected for the first round of interviews will be asked to supply the names of three references, at least one of whom can speak to teaching qualifications.
For further inquiries, contact the search committee chair at statsearch@union.edu.
Compensation
The annual salary range for this position is $93,000-$96,000. The wage/salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty and training. The stated hiring rate/range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the rate/range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
Location: Schenectady, NY

  • Healthcare: Medical (PPO & HDHP), Dental, and Vision Insurance (Flexible Spending and Dependent Care Accounts)
