What is online math teaching?

Online math teaching involves instructing students in mathematics through digital platforms, rather than in a traditional classroom setting. Teachers use video conferencing, interactive whiteboards, and digital resources to deliver lessons, assign homework, and assess student progress. This mode of teaching allows for flexibility in scheduling and can reach students from diverse locations. Online math teachers may work for schools, tutoring companies, or as independent instructors.

What are some common challenges faced by online math teachers, and how can they overcome them?

Online math teachers often face challenges such as engaging students in a virtual setting, addressing diverse learning styles, and managing technological issues. To overcome these, teachers can incorporate interactive tools like digital whiteboards and math games, provide personalized feedback, and establish clear communication channels with students and parents. Regularly attending professional development workshops also helps educators stay updated with the latest online teaching strategies and technologies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an online math teacher, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Online Math Teacher, you need a strong grasp of mathematics, effective instructional techniques, and typically a teaching credential or relevant degree. Familiarity with virtual classroom platforms (like Zoom or Google Classroom), learning management systems, and digital assessment tools is essential. Strong communication, patience, and the ability to engage and motivate students remotely set top performers apart. These skills ensure students receive quality math education and support, even in a virtual environment.

Compensation: $75+/hour for teaching + $25-35/hour for non-teaching/admin time

Join Think Academy as a full-time Math Competition Coach, teaching AIME and JMO-level content to advanced competition students. Teach with a structured curriculum, receive paid training, and grow into long-term coaching and curriculum roles. This is a long-term teaching opportunity — not a short-term tutoring role.

About Think Academy

Think Academy US, a wholly owned subsidiary of TAL Education Group (NYSE: TAL), is an education technology company providing K–12 extracurricular learning services through science and technology. We provide full-cycle services to foster students' critical thinking, strengthen their logic skills, and help them achieve their goals through innovative teaching techniques. Each week, more than 6 million students are enrolled across TAL's online and offline education platforms.

Why This Role Is Different

Most teaching roles expect you to build everything yourself. Here, you coach within a structured instructional system: curriculum, problem sets, training, and team support are already in place, so you can focus on teaching quality and student growth instead of building materials from scratch.

  • Stronger Teaching Support — we provide pre-developed curriculum and lesson materials, structured onboarding, ongoing training, and a team to collaborate with instead of teaching in isolation
  • Long-Term Career Growth — high performers can grow into Senior Coach, Curriculum Development, or Academic Operations/Management roles
  • Competitive, Growing Earnings — paid for both teaching and non-teaching work, with performance-based raises, and the potential to move into year-round teaching for more stable long-term income
What You'll Do
  • Teach AMC10 / AIME / JMO competition problems virtually through the Think Academy Teaching Platform
  • Develop personalized training plans tailored to students' levels and goals
  • Create high-quality problem sets, handouts, and learning materials aligned with various competition systems
  • Stay up to date with the latest trends, formats, and problem styles of annual math contests
  • Guide and mentor students in preparing for local and international math competitions, including BMT, HMMT, and others
Schedule & Commitment
  • Onboarding starts Summer 2026, with paid in-person training in June/July
  • ~3-4 classes/week (3-hour classes, ~9-12 teaching hours), plus admin hours (problem set development, grading, prep, student/parent communication), total 30-40 hrs/week
  • Class windows (Pacific Time): Wed-Fri, 4pm-8pm and Sat-Sun, 9am-8pm
  • Once classes are assigned, your schedule stays consistent week to week (except federal holidays)
  • Commit to at least one year (till May 2027)
Compensation & Benefits
  • Teaching Hours: $75+/hour
  • Non-Teaching/Admin Hours: $25-35/hour (grading, class prep, parent communication, and related work)
  • Performance-based pay increases and bonus opportunities as you grow
  • Benefits: 401(k), health/dental/vision insurance (based on eligibility)
  • Visa sponsorship may be considered for long-term, high-performing teachers
Who We're Looking For
  • Academic background in Mathematics or a related STEM field (Master's degree or higher)
  • Personal experience in math competitions, with at least qualification to USA Junior Mathematical Olympiad or equivalent level
  • Strong mathematical foundation and deep understanding of competition-style problem solving
  • Ability to explain advanced concepts clearly and inspire students at different levels
  • Available during the class windows above
  • Passionate about competitive mathematics and committed to helping students excel
  • Prior competition math teaching or coaching experience
  • Participation in team-based math competitions (e.g., BMT, HMMT) is a strong plus
