Job Description
The Adult Basic Education High School Equivalency (HSE) instructor position with the Division of Workforce and Economic Development at the College of Southern Nevada actively maintains a pool of qualified HSE instructors.
The department will, on an as-needed basis, select individuals to fulfill part-time, temporary, non-tenure-track instructional needs.
CSN's Adult Basic Education instructors prepare adult learners from beginning to advanced levels of literacy and numeracy proficiency in preparation for the High School Equivalency (HSE) exam and post-secondary professional and academic pursuits.
Students may take either the GED or HiSET test to earn the HSE certificate issued by the State of Nevada. The five-part HSE exam includes reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. Classes integrate classroom instruction, online learning, career exploration, and workplace skills.
The program requires dynamic, engaging instructors with excellent communication skills.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Teaching Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Teaching and/or understanding the teaching methods of Basic Skills, Pre-HSE, and HSE Preparation
  • Teaching of HSE/GED/HiSet Preparation: mathematics
  • Maintaining and submitting accurate student records (i.e., syllabi, attendance, weekly lesson plans)
  • Motivating students to complete their educational goals beyond a basic education
  • Communicating and working cooperatively with colleagues on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that enhance the development of the Adult Basic Education program
  • Attending professional development opportunities and staff meetings
  • Adhering to the prescribed curriculum and standards
  • Using and developing a variety of effective teaching techniques and assessment methods (including exams) to support the rigorous program.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft and Google Suite
  • Ability to work in and with a diverse population
  • Time management skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Exhibit an appreciation of, sensitivity to, and respect for a diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Experience in a Hybrid classroom online/in-person classes
  • Knowledge of educational technology and its use in classroom environments
  • Knowledge of IET/workforce programming
  • Interpret and apply educational data to program standards and benchmarks
  • Knowledge of monitoring student progress using the following online programs: TABE, CASAS, Aztec and WorkKeys student portals.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Mathematics, Literacy, or a closely related field from an accredited institution
  • Experience teaching basic through intermediate level math, or High School Equivalent testing preparation

SALARY:
  • $23.00 - $30.00 Hourly

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE:
  • Program Length: Approximately 8-10 weeks
  • Class Schedule: 3-4 days per week
  • Class Duration: 3 hours per class
  • Morning Session: 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
  • Evening Sessions: 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
  • Location: Times and locations may vary throughout the Las Vegas Valley
  • Additional Schedules: Additional class schedules may become available
