What We Look For In a Latin 1 Tutor

• Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of Latin noun declensions including first through third, verb conjugations in present, imperfect, and perfect tenses, basic sentence structure, vocabulary acquisition, and Roman cultural and historical context. Ability to explain nominative, accusative, genitive, dative, and ablative case functions and subject-object-verb word order while preparing students for continued Latin study and standardized assessments.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching Latin morphology, translation techniques, and grammatical analysis. Guides students through parsing verb forms, identifying noun cases in context, translating simple Latin passages, and recognizing English derivatives from Latin roots. Emphasizes systematic grammar learning and connects Latin to understanding English vocabulary, Romance language foundations, and Roman history and mythology.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with Latin 1 curricula and common challenges such as memorizing declension and conjugation paradigms, understanding the case system, and developing translation strategies. Adapts instruction using paradigm charts, vocabulary root analysis, and graded Latin readings to support beginning Latin students at the middle school, high school, or college level building foundational skills.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
