Job Description
The UAB Heersink School of Medicine is seeking applications for Chair, Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science. The Chair reports to and works closely with the Dean of the Heersink School of Medicine, and the Senior Vice Dean for Research, Heersink School of Medicine, to fulfill both UAB's and the department's commitment to advancing human health by transforming data, tools and techniques into actionable knowledge.
Responsibilities:
The Chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science will support the School's mission and vision through the creation of novel strategies to sustain and grow the Department and continue to enhance the mission areas of research and education. S/he will assess gaps within those mission areas and identify future opportunities and needs. Provide strategic leadership for all aspects of the Department, including the positive representation of the Department within the Heersink School of Medicine, and the UAB enterprise, creating collaboration opportunities and working in support of institutional goals.
Required Qualifications
Required/Preferred Qualifications:
1. Ph.D., M.D. or M.D./ Ph.D.
2. Academic rank of Professor.
3. Accomplished leader in the field of Biomedical Informatics and Data Science, with a demonstrated ability to build programs that develop and apply cutting edge biomedical informatics and AI technologies to healthcare applications.
4. Strong ability to work collaboratively with leaders of various backgrounds and interests.
5. Competency navigating interactions with educational, research and service missions of a complex academic medical center department.
6. Proven capabilities in financial stewardship, budget management and resource allocation.
7. Compelling vision for building an internationally recognized, research-oriented department of biomedical informatics and data sciences which is a top choice for undergraduate and graduate education.
8. Qualities:

  • Exhibits a style that supports change and innovation, with an ability to delegate yet maintain overall control.
