Job description

General Description Performs responsible technical work on an assigned shift dispatching police personnel and equipment usually in response to emergency situations; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision. Essential Functions Receiving calls for service; dispatching personnel and equipment; maintaining logs and records; entering data.

Receives police, 911, fire and other service requests and calls; transfers calls to appropriate agency; Operates radios, telephone, switchboard, alarm systems, recording devices and computer terminals; Dispatches personnel and emergency equipment; transfers medical and fire related calls to County when applicable; Performs all responsibilities of a certified D.C.I. operator; conducts D.C.I. inquiries including criminal histories; Enters all calls for service into computer aided dispatch system; Assists police personnel by providing services and information; Contacts the elderly in the area for the RUOK Program for a daily welfare check; Enters a variety of information into system; Types and files a variety of reports and records into computer system; Performs all responsibilities of a Police Records Clerk; Performs related tasks as required

Typical Qualifications Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school including or supplemented by courses in typing and some experience in general clerical work with some basic computer knowledge. Possession of a valid D.C.I. certificate issued by the State of North Carolina

General knowledge of the methods of operating the communication system; general knowledge of radio and teletype procedures; general knowledge of the geography of the City and location of important buildings; general knowledge of police forms, terminology and records; thorough knowledge of departmental programs, policies and procedures; ability to perform a considerable volume of detailed work; ability to maintain files; ability to type accurately and at a reasonable rate of speed; ability to operate general office and data entry equipment; ability to follow written and oral directions; ability to operate personal computer including some knowledge of applicable software packages; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public. Physical Demands This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires reaching, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of machines, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions, and noise.
