What is an online computer science?
An Online Computer Science job involves working remotely in roles related to software development, data analysis, cybersecurity, IT support, or other computing fields. Professionals in these jobs use digital tools to write code, analyze data, manage networks, or develop algorithms while collaborating with teams online. These positions offer flexibility and are common in industries like tech, finance, healthcare, and education.
What does an online computer science do?
Professionals in online computer science roles typically focus on software development, debugging, testing, and collaborating with distributed teams to design and implement technical solutions. Daily tasks may include writing and reviewing code, participating in virtual stand-up meetings, and utilizing digital tools for project management and communication. Since these roles are remote, you may also be responsible for managing your schedule and ensuring regular progress updates. Working effectively in this environment requires a proactive approach to communication and a commitment to continuous learning as new technologies emerge.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in an online computer science role?
To excel in an online computer science role, you need a deep understanding of programming, algorithms, software development, and computer systems, often supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with coding languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), version control systems like Git, and online collaboration platforms is essential. Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective written communication are crucial in remote settings. These competencies ensure you can independently deliver high-quality technical work, collaborate virtually, and adapt to evolving project requirements.

Key responsibilities
Teach courses related to data science, computer science, mathematics, or statistics as appropriate to the department and candidate's background.
Engage in research and scholarly activities, including publishing relevant research work.
Contribute to the university community through service, supporting the integration of faith and academic work, and engaging with students beyond the classroom.
Job description
Calvin University invites applications for up to three tenure-track faculty positions, one designated for the Data Science Programs, one for the Department of Computer Science, and one for the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Each of these positions will begin August 2024. Candidates at all levels of experience will be considered. Successful data science candidates could join either the Department of Computer Science or the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, depending on their background and interests.

Ideal candidates will hold a PhD in data science, computer science, statistics, mathematics, or a related field. Candidates with a master's degree and five years of relevant experience will also be considered.
We are looking for candidates who can provide excellent instruction and have an active stream of relevant research and publication. Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching using a variety of methods and instructional technology.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENTS
The Data Science Program is a joint effort of the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The undergraduate major includes courses in programming, statistics, machine learning, visualization, ethics, and various electives. The program also includes two undergraduate minors, a new online MS program is being launched Fall 2023, and courses co-taught with the School of Business. For details about these programs, see the web pages for Data Science and for the new MS program. We seek faculty who are interested in shaping both the undergraduate and graduate programs.
The Department of Computer Science includes six tenure-track faculty members and a full-time systems engineer to support classes and research in the department. Computer Science especially seeks candidates in machine learning or programming languages, but candidates in all fields are encouraged to apply. The department offers a minor and two majors, including a BCS degree accredited by ABET. For details, see the web page for Computer Science.
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics includes ten tenure-track faculty in pure and applied mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education and offers majors in mathematics, statistics, and actuarial science. In addition, the department supports and advises secondary mathematics education students as they complete grades 5-9 and grades 7-12 certification programs. For additional information consult the Mathematics and Statistics web site. Applications in any area of mathematics or statistics are welcome; preference will be given to applicants with experience and interests that support the programs in statistics and actuarial science.
Together these departments feature supportive colleagues, excellent facilities, disciplined students, including many international students, support for women in STEM, and strong undergraduate majors.
