What We Look For In a ESL/ELL Tutor
- Advanced Subject Mastery: Deep knowledge of English phonology, grammar structures, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, writing conventions, listening skills, and speaking fluency for non-native speakers. - Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with ESL curricula and WIDA or CEFR proficiency frameworks, and common challenges such as article and preposition usage, irregular verb forms, and pronunciation difficulties specific to first language backgrounds. Adapts instruction using scaffolded reading materials, visual grammar supports, and communicative activities to support English learners from beginning through advanced proficiency levels across age groups.
- Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
- Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
