Job Summary:

The Adjunct Instructor for Sociology is responsible for teaching part-time within the program. The successful Adjunct Instructor for Sociology must possess the academic and practical expertise to guide student learning and success, and to serve as a mentor and model for students. This position will demonstrate strong instructional skills and engage a diverse student body using traditional, nontraditional, and innovative methods of instruction and effectively structure classes and curriculum to support program and course outcomes.
The Behavioral Science Department is committed to student-centered teaching that fosters personal and academic success of our students, who are predominantly first-generation and from backgrounds underrepresented in higher education. Ideal candidates will be able to help transition new students into the college experience. This position requires Colorado residency and the ability to teach at the Auraria campus or online formats.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The Sociology Adjunct instructor will deliver instruction consistent with the content and learning objectives of the course syllabus; maintain grade and attendance records; recognize and respond appropriately to student diversity; utilize clear learning goals and well-planned activities; being available, either face to face or electronically to students in assigned classes to provide additional academic support as needed and appropriate for the teaching assignment. Primary teaching duties will be within the Sociology (SOC) discipline. Additional opportunities however, may be available to teach Women’s Studies and Ethnic Studies courses. Adjunct instructors are hired to teach classes on an as-needed, usually semester-by-semester basis. All such teaching assignments are dependent on schedule and enrollment. Beyond teaching, adjunct instructors are active participants in the department with opportunities to engage in professional development, department projects, and program assessment

• Curriculum and program development experience is helpful.
• Knowledge of, and experience with program assessment.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
The successful Sociology adjunct instructor must have a master’s or doctorate in Sociology OR one of these closely related disciplines: Social Work, Women's Studies, Ethnic Studies, Social Sciences.
Or any master's degree or higher with 18 graduate credit hours in any of the disciplines below:
Social work, women's studies, gender studies, ethnic studies, social sciences, social policy, anthropology, urban studies, peace studies

Experience:
One (1) year teaching experience in the Sociology discipline (minimum).

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience:

• Two (2) years of experience teaching Sociology, Women’s Studies, Ethnic Studies, or Social Sciences in a community college, college, or university setting.
• Experience teaching diverse, multi-cultural populations (i.e. first generation, low income, non-traditional, veterans, etc.).
• Experience teaching in multi-cultural settings.
• Experience teaching on-line courses.
• Experience with the use of student Learning Management Systems (D2L), instructional technology, and Microsoft Office programs.
• Applied job and/or research experience is helpful.
