About the Job

Bancroft Construction Services provides environmental compliance, biological monitoring, and construction support services for public and private infrastructure projects throughout California. Our team works closely with construction managers, contractors, and regulatory agencies to ensure projects are completed efficiently while maintaining full compliance with environmental permits and regulations.

Position Summary

We are seeking full-time and variable on-call Field Biologists who will be responsible for biological surveys, construction monitoring, and environmental compliance activities in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. Responsibilities may include general and focused biological surveys, nesting bird surveys and monitoring, sensitive species monitoring, habitat assessments, and preparation of field documentation and reports.

The position requires the ability to work independently in the field, communicate effectively with construction personnel and project managers, and make sound, real-time decisions to maintain regulatory compliance across diverse environmental settings, including coastal, agricultural, desert, and riparian habitats.

We are seeking for candidates in the following counties: Fresno, Kern, Madera, Riverside, Tuolumne, Imperial, Kings, Mono, San Bernardino, Tulare, Inyo, Los Angeles, Orange, Santa Barbara, Ventura.

Employment status is based on experience, project needs and project approvals. A 4WD or AWD vehicle preferred for the role.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Conduct general biological reconnaissance surveys, habitat assessments, and focused (including protocol-level) surveys for sensitive plant and wildlife species
  • Perform nesting bird surveys and monitoring, identifying species and nesting behaviors by sight and sound in compliance with applicable buffer requirements and permit conditions
  • Conduct biological and environmental compliance monitoring during active construction activities
  • Coordinate with construction crews, superintendents, and project managers to ensure compliance with biological permit conditions and environmental commitments
  • Complete pre-construction surveys and daily monitoring documentation
  • Provide environmental awareness and sensitive species education to construction personnel
  • Accurately collect field data, photographs, GPS points, and monitoring observations and submit daily reports
  • Assist with data entry, organization, and management of biological records
  • Interpret and apply biological permit conditions, regulatory documents, and agency approvals
  • Communicate field observations, compliance concerns, and schedule availability to project managers and senior biologists
  • Perform other field or office support tasks as assigned

Qualifications & Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, or a closely related field
  • 2 years of professional experience in biological surveys, biological consulting, or construction/environmental monitoring
  • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record and access to a reliable vehicle
  • Experience working with Southern CA and Central CA special-status species (federal or state listed, candidate, or sensitive species)
  • Experience conducting nesting bird surveys and monitoring
  • Familiarity with CEQA, NEPA, CESA, and FESA requirements
  • Experience using GPS units, Survey123, ArcGIS, ArcCollector, or similar field data collection tools
  • Scientific Collecting Permit (CDFW), USFWS 10(a)(1)(A) permit, or similar authorizations (preferred, not required)

Work Environment

This position is field-intensive and may involve:

  • Long hours in outdoor environments and temperature extremes
  • Walking or hiking on uneven terrain while carrying field equipment
  • Working in active construction sites around heavy equipment

Candidates must be physically capable of performing required field duties safely.

Compensation & Employment Status

  • Hourly Rate: $35–$50+/hour (based on experience and qualifications)
  • Employment Type: Full-Time and Variable Part-time
