FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Hourly
Reports To: Project Manager
Job Type: On-Call, Variable-Time
Compensation: $32 - $40 per hour, based on relevant experience
Work for this role is anticipated to begin in late Summer 2026 and extend through Fall/Winter, with the potential to becoming full-time as work evolves.

JOB SUMMARY: The Biologist III is responsible for conducting biological research and fieldwork, performing impact analyses, supporting permit assessments, and preparing technical reports to support biological and regulatory requirements.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential job functions:
  • Conduct special-status plant and wildlife surveys and inventories
  • Perform nesting bird surveys, vernal pool surveys, and habitat assessments, including plant community identification
  • Complete pre-construction surveys to identify special-status habitats and species
  • Provide biological monitoring during construction activities to ensure required resource protection measures are implemented
  • Work on portions of larger projects or manage multiple moderately sized projects, providing subject-matter expertise in biology and ecology, including plant communities
  • Independently evaluate, select, apply, and adapt standard methodologies, techniques, and procedures
  • Review junior staff work for technical accuracy and provide technical guidance to other professionals and technicians
  • Evaluates and proposes adaptations to standard methodologies and procedures for non-routine components of assignments
  • Compose and review biological technical reports (desktop memorandum, BE and BA)
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings
  • Perform a combination of field-based and desktop work, with the ability to work long field days throughout the year
  • Support single-day and multi-day field assignments as required by project needs

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • B.S. degree in biology, ecology, natural resources, and/or a closely related discipline
  • Minimum of 6-8 years' experience conducting nesting bird and/or special status wildlife surveys; providing project support as a lead biologist to prepare reports or findings that meet environmental compliance requirements
  • Ability to identify bird species and associated habitats
  • Ability to identify reptile and amphibian species and associated habitats
  • Ability to identify mammal species and associated habitats
  • Ability to identify plant communities and botanical species
  • Ability to work efficiently and meet short deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Clear communication, organization, accuracy, motivation, dependability, and trustworthiness; ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Highly organized, motivated, thorough, accurate, dependable, and trustworthy
  • Ability to interact and coordinate with state, federal, and tribal agencies
  • Proficiency with standard field equipment and technology
  • Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with employees and vendors

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Demonstrated experience conducting wildlife and plant surveys in Idaho
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Survey an average of 30 acres/5 miles per day and carry personal health and safety equipment (i.e., personal water, sunscreen, etc.)
  • Work in moderate weather conditions (fluctuating temperatures and inclement weather, including rain and snow)
  • Familiarity with basic use of ESRI GIS applications (including ArcGIS desktop, AGOL, Field Maps, Survey123, etc.)
  • Excellent navigation skills and good driving record
  • Experience driving a four-wheel drive vehicle off-road or in rough terrain
  • Experience in construction monitoring
  • Experience working around heavy machinery and communicating with construction crews
  • Familiarity with typical utility operations and maintenance activities
  • Possession of a Scientific Collecting or Federal 10a1a permit
