GEI Consultants is seeking multiple biological compliance monitors based out of our Rancho Cordova and/or Oakland offices to assist with compliance monitoring on a variety of projects in the San Francisco Bay Area. This position requires experience in biological compliance monitoring in the Bay Area, specifically in conducting biological pre-construction surveys, clearance surveys, compliance monitoring, and reporting. Projects will involve monitoring construction crews and conducting species-specific surveys. Experience with California red-legged frog surveys and handling is required, and experience with San Francisco dusky-footed woodrat, nesting birds, and/or roosting bats is preferred. Applicants should live within a 1-hour driving radius of Cupertino.
 
Essential Responsibilities & Duties 
  • Understand permit conditions and other technical documents and implement onsite.
  • Monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with mitigation measures, permit conditions, and environmental regulations. 
  • Complete daily survey and monitoring logs.
  • Effectively and proactively communicate with construction crews, project personnel, and agency staff.
  • Present worker environmental awareness training to crews of up to 20 personnel.
  • A typical workday consists of an 8- to 12-hour day with a 30-minute lunch, two ten-minute breaks, and may include irregular hours (20-55 hours per week) and start/end times, in accordance with project requirements.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s or higher degree in botany, wildlife, biological sciences, environmental sciences, or a related field.
  • At least 2 years of experience conducting construction compliance monitoring.
  • At least 2 years of experience conducting field surveys and/or compliance monitoring for special-status wildlife, nesting birds, and/or roosting bats that occur in the Bay Area.
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating habitat suitability and identifying special-status wildlife species of the Bay Area.
  • Experience in identifying, handling, and relocating various life stages of California red-legged frog, including:
  • Ability to identify California red-legged frogs by calls of adult males;
  • Thirty hours of experience conducting three protocol-level surveys for California red-legged frog including capture by hand, dip net, or seine. Survey experience must be acquired in at least two different aquatic features. At least one California red-legged frog must be detected for a survey to contribute positive hours, but up to 4 hours of protocol surveys with negative results may count towards the 30-hour requirement. USFWS-approved red-legged frog workshops may count towards the 30-hour requirement, including up to 4 hours of field experience from introductory workshops and all hours of field experience from advanced workshops, if approved by USFWS.
  • Basic abilities in identifying general native and non-native plant and animal species.
  • Basic understanding of state and federal laws regarding the protection of sensitive species and habitats.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills and experience working independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic computer experience including Microsoft Office software.
  • Valid Driver's License and clean DMV record. 
  • Compliance with company safety protocols and procedures.
         Desired Qualifications 
        • Standard First Aid and CPR training.
        • Mine Safety and Health Administration Part 46 Training (24 hours).
        • Demonstrated experience being a CDFW and/or USFWS qualified biologist for Bay Area species or previously approved by CDFW and/or USFWS for compliance monitoring.
        • Experience conducting field surveys and/or compliance monitoring at various locations in northern California and completing associated documentation.
        • Experience conducting impact analyses, wetland delineations, environmental permitting and/or similar activities is a plus.
        • Prior technical writing experience (e.g., survey results memos, annual biological reports, etc.) is preferred. 
        • Working knowledge of relevant environmental statutes and regulations (e.g., CEQA, NEPA, Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, Fish and Game Code) and associated permits is preferred.
        • Experience with ArcGIS Field Maps, CNDDB, and/or Wildnote is a plus.
