Job Summary

The Surgeon is a licensed physician responsible for providing comprehensive surgical care to patients across the continuum of care. Using evidence-based medical and surgical practices, the Surgeon evaluates, diagnoses, and treats patients requiring operative and non-operative management. The Surgeon collaborates with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure safe, effective, and patient-centered care while promoting optimal outcomes and minimizing complications. The Surgeon practices in accordance with hospital policies, medical staff bylaws, ethical standards, and applicable state and federal regulations.

Essential Functions Of The Role

Clinical Judgment

Performs comprehensive patient assessments, including history, physical examination, diagnostic interpretation, and surgical risk evaluation. Determines surgical candidacy, develops operative plans, and performs surgical procedures consistent with specialty training and standards of care. Monitors patient progress and modifies treatment plans as necessary to achieve desired clinical outcomes.

Clinical Inquiry

Engages in continuous evaluation of surgical outcomes and quality metrics. Supports evidence-based practice through research utilization, clinical guidelines, and participation in quality improvement initiatives. Maintains current knowledge of advancements in surgical techniques and technology.

Patient-Centered Care

Provides compassionate, respectful, and culturally sensitive care to patients and families. Explains diagnoses, treatment options, risks, benefits, and alternatives to surgery. Manages perioperative pain and postoperative recovery to promote healing and comfort.

Response To Diversity

Recognizes and incorporates individual patient differences, including culture, beliefs, values, age, gender, and socioeconomic factors, into surgical planning and care delivery.

Advocacy And Ethical Practice

Upholds patient rights, confidentiality, and informed consent. Acts as a patient advocate by ensuring ethical decision-making and addressing clinical or ethical concerns in collaboration with the care team.

Facilitation Of Learning

Educates patients and families on surgical procedures, postoperative care, and recovery expectations. Participates in the education and mentorship of medical staff, residents, students, and allied health professionals as applicable.

Collaboration

Works collaboratively with anesthesiology, nursing, advanced practice providers, and other healthcare professionals to deliver coordinated perioperative care. Communicates effectively to ensure continuity and safety of patient care.

Systems Thinking

Utilizes hospital resources efficiently while prioritizing patient safety, quality outcomes, and cost-effective care. Participates in on-call coverage and emergency surgical services as required.

Professionalism

Maintains active medical licensure, board certification, and hospital privileges. Participates in medical staff activities, committees, peer review, and shared governance. Demonstrates commitment to ongoing professional development, continuing medical education, and adherence to institutional values.

Key Success Factors

  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree
  • Completion of accredited surgical residency (and fellowship if applicable)
  • Current, unrestricted medical license in the state of Texas
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in surgical specialty
  • BLS and ACLS certification (AHA preferred)
  • Strong clinical judgment and surgical decision-making skills
  • Knowledge of surgical standards, procedures, and patient safety protocols
  • Familiarity with medical laws, regulations, and accreditation standards
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively in high-pressure and emergency situations
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records (EPIC experience preferred)
