Old Fields information

What is an old field?

In a job context, 'Old Fields' typically refers to agricultural or pastoral lands that have been previously cultivated or used but are now left fallow or are in the process of ecological succession. These areas can be important for environmental studies, land management, or restoration projects. Workers or researchers might be involved in monitoring plant and animal recovery, soil quality, and the natural return of native species. Old fields are often studied to understand how ecosystems recover after disturbance and how land can be best managed for conservation or agricultural reuse.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an old fields manager?

To thrive as an Old Fields Manager, you need expertise in land management, agricultural practices, and environmental conservation, often supported by a degree in agriculture, forestry, or environmental science. Familiarity with GIS mapping software, farm management systems, and relevant certifications in land stewardship or pesticide application is commonly required. Strong leadership, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are essential for coordinating teams and engaging with stakeholders. These competencies ensure the sustainable use and productivity of old fields while balancing ecological and economic objectives.

What are common challenges faced by professionals working in land management roles focused on old fields?

Professionals managing old fields often encounter challenges such as invasive species control, restoring native vegetation, and balancing conservation goals with land use needs. They typically work as part of interdisciplinary teams, collaborating with ecologists, landowners, and government agencies. Successful candidates should be prepared for fieldwork in varying conditions and for developing long-term management plans that address both ecological and stakeholder considerations.

Want to spend your summer outside instead of stuck inside? Join our crew and become a hands-on helper installing and fixing automatic pool covers. You'll ride along with an experienced Field Tech, learn real skills, and get paid while doing it. Not a bad deal, right?
What You'll Be Doing
  • Team up with a seasoned Field Tech to troubleshoot and repair pool cover systems
  • Grab tools, prep for jobs, and be the MVP of "having what we need when we need it"
  • Help document work (yes, we have to write things down sometimes)
  • Deliver friendly, professional service-because happy customers = happy team

Bonus Tasks
  • Keep the work vehicle stocked, clean, and ready to roll
  • Help keep job sites organized (no one likes a messy truck)
  • Jump in wherever needed-every day is a little different

What You Need
  • Must be 16 years old or older
  • Good attitude and willingness to learn (we can teach the rest)

Skills That Make You Successful
  • Can communicate effectively (talk and text)
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Problem-solving mindset (figuring out why something isn't working)
  • Ability to stay organized in a fast-paced environment
  • Basic math skills (measurements and simple calculations)
  • Team player mentality
  • Flexible availability, including occasional longer days or weekends

What the Job Is Like
  • Frequent movement including standing, kneeling, crawling, and working with tools
  • Ability to lift up to 100 lbs
  • Outdoor work in varying weather conditions including heat, dirt, dust, and noise
  • Exposure to tools, equipment, and active job sites

Why You'll Like It
  • Work outdoors instead of behind a desk
  • Gain hands-on technical skills
  • Be part of a supportive, hardworking team
  • No two days are the same
