Job description

Summary:

The fundamental purpose of the Warehouse Assistant is to operate a bale clamp lift truck, forklift B/P or roll clamp truck to receive all OCC (Old Corrugated Containerboard) arriving in vans and/or on flatbed trucks, receive other goods and materials, such as totes and other freight. Shipping Clerk is the primary resource that will prepare finished paper rolls of corrugated medium to be shipped out through flatbeds, vans and railcars.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Able to work safely after receiving extensive safety training in all OSHA required subjects that relate to a paper mill manufacturing environment
  • At the beginning of the shift it is essential to complete the forklift truck checklist, inspecting the forklift for fluid levels, safety features, brakes, tires, steering and other features.
  • Must participate with shift change with the outgoing shift personnel to discuss scheduling issues or problems that may have occurred or may arise during their shift.
  • Ability to drive fork lift truck, clamp truck, and B/P truck with fine skill to assure equipment is not damaged. Refuel trucks at end of each shift.
  • Direct incoming traffic in the yard amongst a variety of suppliers. Direct drivers to specific areas of the yard.
  • Must process necessary receiving documentation and weigh trucks in and out of mill.
  • With incoming deliveries, must insert a moisture probe into 5 bales and record moisture readings.
  • Stage bales in bales in yard either to the high density, the store bale sections DLK section or next to the belt.
  • Knowledge of roll storage areas example C001, A001, ST4.
  • Understanding and ability to stack rolls safely and chock properly to avoid any movement.
  • Comprehend trim schedule and be able to plan out loads in railcars, vans and flatbed. Be able find rolls in Mesa system to complete partial loads.
  • Must be able to load rail cars, vans and flatbeds using BPs or clamp trucks for outgoing shipments.
  • Must be able to comprehend smart sheet, log data, Print BOL, and provide necessary shipping documentation to drivers.
  • Must work along with hostlers when vans are full and need to be moved. Communicate with Gardner dispatcher when Logistics needs specific equipment: vans or flat beds. Partner with Union Pacific crews when rail switches are being completed.
  • Work with dry end crew on trim schedule issues, example what rolls need to be plugged or if some combos need to be ran before others. Converting rolls from hold or ATP to good rolls.
  • Ability to rail push, drive rail pusher and know ground men work along with all safety criteria to do a push safely.
  • Follows checklists for safety or clean-up
  • Need to have aptitude for using technology including computer software: Outlook, Mesa and other programs for the efficiency of the department. Be able to operate Mesa units mounted on lifts.
  • Work rotating shift, or fixed shift and overtime when necessary.
  • Other duties as assigned

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of a High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • Must be able to read & write simple sentences and speak to others in English.
  • Must be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers.
  • Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple written or oral instructions.
  • Applicants must pass a mechanical aptitude test [exception: internal applicants who took the test prior to hire].
  • Technicians may be required to learn how to use various Company software packages including, but not limited to, MESA, Maximo, JD Edwards, and Microsoft Word and/or Excel.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is required to:
  • Stand for long periods of time;
  • Walk the distance of a large manufacturing facility;
  • Reach with hands and arms above the shoulders;
  • Have full wrist range of motion to use tools;
  • Bend at the waist and twist upper body;
  • Grip hand and power tools, ladders and equipment;
  • Use hands to turn valves, push and pull items;
  • Climb or balance on stairs, ladders & catwalks;
  • Stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
  • Move, lift & carry up to 50 pounds (Occasionally up to 100 pounds)
  • Occasionally required to sit, drive heavy machinery such as a bobcat, forklift and clamp truck.
  • Vision abilities required are close vision and depth perception.
  • Able to verbally communicate and hearing abilities.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
