Olap Cube Developer information

What are some common challenges faced by OLAP Cube Developers when optimizing cube performance?

OLAP Cube Developers often encounter challenges related to query performance and data refresh times, especially as datasets grow larger and more complex. Optimizing cube design, such as managing aggregations, partitions, and indexing, is crucial to ensure fast response times for end users. Developers also need to balance the granularity of data with the need for efficient storage and processing. Collaborating closely with data architects and BI analysts helps in understanding user requirements and fine-tuning cubes to support business needs effectively.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an OLAP Cube Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an OLAP Cube Developer, you need a strong background in database design, data modeling, and proficiency in multidimensional expressions (MDX), usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), Business Intelligence tools, and relevant certifications like Microsoft Certified: Data Analyst Associate are typically required. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help translate business requirements into robust analytical solutions. These capabilities ensure efficient data analysis, accurate reporting, and the delivery of actionable insights for organizational decision-making.

What is an OLAP Cube Developer?

An OLAP Cube Developer is a professional who designs, develops, and maintains OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) cubes, which are data structures used to quickly analyze complex data from multiple perspectives. These developers work with business intelligence tools and databases to organize large volumes of data, enabling fast and efficient querying for reporting and analytics. Their work supports decision-making by providing users with multidimensional views of data, such as sales by region, product, or time period.

Job description

Job Description
Build the platforms that keep finance moving-especially when timelines are tight and accuracy matters most. In this role, you will lead hands-on modernization and operational excellence for Oracle Hyperion Essbase 21c (on-premise), reducing manual effort through automation and strengthening the stability and performance of critical close and forecasting cycles. You will collaborate with Finance and technology partners to deliver outcomes that are reliable, auditable, and repeatable, while helping shape how the team scales cube operations for the future.
As an EPM OLAP Cube Administration Lead at JPMorganChase within the Finance Platform & Modernization Team, you will own day-to-day administration of Oracle Hyperion Essbase 21c (on-premise) BSO/ASO cubes, including MaXL automation, calculation scripts, load rules, security, performance tuning, and controlled deployments. You will serve as the primary technical point of contact for production health, data and metadata movements, and cube processing, partnering with Finance stakeholders, management information systems teams, and technology partners to deliver reliable, auditable, and repeatable outcomes across critical close and forecast cycles.
Job Responsibilities
  • Own day-to-day on-premise Essbase cube administration and operations, including cube availability, processing, batch execution, and production readiness during close and forecast cycles.
  • Develop, maintain, and standardize MaXL scripts to automate cube operations, security provisioning, data/metadata loads, refresh activities, and controlled maintenance routines.
  • Build and maintain Essbase calc scripts to support allocations, currency translation, aggregation strategies, and performance-optimized calculation frameworks aligned to Finance reporting requirements.
  • Design, maintain, and troubleshoot Essbase load rules and associated data/metadata load routines to ensure accurate, auditable, and repeatable processing outcomes.
Administer BSO/ASO outline management (dimensions, hierarchies, attributes, UDAs), including controlled hierarchy changes, impact assessment, and reconciliation support for reporting hierarchies.
  • Manage Essbase security administration and access controls, partnering with governance stakeholders to enforce least-privilege and ensure timely provisioning and deprovisioning aligned to policy.
  • Lead production incident triage and problem management for Essbase processing failures, performance degradation, and data/metadata issues, driving root-cause remediation and preventive controls.
  • Partner with database administrators, server administrators, and internal technology teams to resolve infrastructure, connectivity, and performance issues impacting cube execution. Partner with data engineering and architecture teams working on data lake and lakehouse platforms (including Databricks) to ensure governed ingestion, transformation, and serving layers align with Essbase load requirements (data, metadata, dimensionality, lineage, and timing).
  • Manage cube build, migration, and maintenance activities across environments, ensuring controlled deployments and robust validation.
  • Collaborate with Finance stakeholders to coordinate submission calendars and validation checkpoints, translating business requirements into stable, automated Essbase operations.
  • Produce and maintain runbooks and operational documentation, and drive measurable improvements in reliability and cycle-time.
Contribute to data modeling efforts and support the design and development of upstream datamarts and database views that source Essbase cube loads, ensuring alignment to Finance dimensionality, reconciliation needs, and reporting requirements.

Required Qualifications, Capabilities and Skills
  • Minimum education and experience required: Bachelor's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or related field of study plus 7 years of experience in the job offered or as an Essbase Administrator, OLAP Technical Lead, Business Intelligence Lead, Senior Application Analyst, Solution Architect, Technical Lead, or related occupation.
  • Minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience administering Oracle Hyperion Essbase (on-premise) in a production environment with responsibility for stability, performance, and operational execution.
  • Advanced proficiency with MaXL scripting, including automation of loads, refreshes, security administration, deployments, and routine operational tasks.
  • Advanced proficiency with Essbase calc scripts, Report scripts, MDX scripts including design, optimization, and ongoing maintenance in large-scale BSO/ASO cubes.
  • Demonstrated expertise developing and troubleshooting load rules and designing automated data and metadata load workflows with strong control and auditability.
  • Deep experience with BSO/ASO cube design, outline management, and performance tuning, including aggregation strategy, memory and caching considerations, and calculation runtime optimization.
  • Strong production operations discipline, including incident management, release and change controls, clear runbook documentation, and the ability to execute under tight close-cycle timelines.

Preferred Qualifications, Capabilities and Skills
  • Familiarity with Finance planning, budgeting, and reporting cycles, including month-end and quarter-end execution rhythms and stakeholder expectations.
  • Experience with automation and integration tooling commonly used alongside on-prem Essbase (for example: scheduling frameworks, scripting, and database procedures) to reduce manual intervention and improve repeatability.
  • Prior experience supporting FP&A teams within a large financial institution, including consumer banking lines of business and management reporting requirements.
  • Experience with dimensional and data modeling and datamart and views design and development used for OLAP cube sourcing and downstream reporting.
  • Familiarity with data lake and lakehouse concepts and tooling (including Databricks) and understanding of ingestion, transformation, and serving patterns (for example: bronze, silver, gold) as they relate to Finance CI/CD pipelines.
