What is an oil tech?

An Oil Tech, or Lube Technician, is responsible for performing basic vehicle maintenance services, such as oil changes, fluid checks, and filter replacements. They inspect vehicles for potential issues, ensure proper lubrication, and follow safety guidelines to keep engines running efficiently. Oil Techs typically work in automotive shops, dealerships, or service centers and may assist with tire rotations and other minor repairs. This role requires attention to detail, mechanical knowledge, and customer service skills.

What does an oil tech do?

A typical day for an Oil Tech involves performing oil changes, replacing filters, checking and topping off other vehicle fluids, and conducting basic inspections of vehicle systems such as brakes and tires. You'll often interact directly with customers to review their service needs and may recommend routine maintenance based on service intervals. The role requires working efficiently, sometimes under time constraints, as part of a team in a busy shop environment. You’ll also be responsible for maintaining a clean work area and following all safety protocols. Many Oil Techs gain valuable hands-on experience that can lead to advanced technician positions with additional training and certifications.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an oil tech?

To thrive as an Oil Tech, you need mechanical aptitude, knowledge of automotive systems—especially lubrication and oil change procedures—and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with vehicle lifts, oil viscosity measurement tools, and commonly used diagnostic equipment is important, with some employers preferring certifications like ASE (Automotive Service Excellence). Attention to detail, strong customer service skills, and the ability to work efficiently as part of a team are valuable soft skills. These competencies are essential to ensure accurate service, customer satisfaction, and safety in a fast-paced automotive environment.

Job description

Position Summary: Are you the best tech in your shop and tired of being treated like you're not?

Done letting flat rates decide what your hard work is worth? Sick of clocking out feeling like you left money and pride on the table? Tired of the same oil changes, the same politics, the same dead-end grind?

You're not built for average. Neither are we.

At Total Recon, A-Level Technicians don't just fix cars, they restore Teslas to factory perfection. We're talking state-of-the-art tools, Tesla-specific repair protocols, and a crew of serious techs who take their craft personally. Every vehicle that rolls through our doors is a challenge worth showing up for.

And here's what you'll never deal with again: flat rates. We pay hourly with built-in overtime every single week, so your hard work actually shows up in your check. No more gambling on hours. No more getting shortchanged for being efficient. Just consistent, reliable pay that rewards the caliber of tech you already are.

This is the shop where your skills finally get the respect and the paycheck they deserve.

You'll thrive here if you:

  • Have A-level mechanical experience from a dealership or independent shop
  • Are ready to step into the future of automotive repair
  • Take pride in precision and won't cut corners
  • Want to be part of something you can actually brag about

If you're the best in your shop but the ceiling is too low...kick the door open and come work where the best belong.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (include, but are not limited to the following):

  • Conduct thorough diagnostic tests to identify vehicle damage and root-cause mechanical or electrical issues.
  • Perform detailed inspections to determine the full scope of repairs needed.
  • Repair and replace damaged components including body panels, frames, suspension, electrical systems, and drivetrain according to Tesla's strict quality standards.
  • Use advanced tools and Tesla-approved repair procedures to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
  • Work closely with estimators, parts associates, and fellow technicians to complete repairs on schedule.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to ensure smooth handoffs and maintain repair quality.
  • Adhere to Tesla safety protocols at all times.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and professional workspace.
  • Properly handle high-voltage components and EV-specific systems with precision and care.

Qualifications Required:

  • Proven experience as an automotive mechanic or technician, ideally in a dealership, collision center, or EV repair facility.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and structural systems. Tesla or EV-specific training is a plus, but not required (training provided).
  • Strong commitment to delivering high-quality workmanship and precise repairs.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, technology-driven environment while maintaining accuracy.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform hands-on work in a shop environment.

Salary: $30.00 - $35.00 per hour; depending on experience.

Work Environment:

This role involves standing for extended periods, using hand and power tools, and working around machinery, and automotive fluids. The environment can be noisy and fast paced, requiring adherence to safety protocols.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing, using virtual meeting and communication tools such as email, Google Meet, and Slack.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 15 pounds, if required.
  • Reasonable accommodations will be made for qualified individuals with disabilities.
