What are oil and gas jobs?

Oil and gas jobs refer to a wide range of careers involved in the exploration, extraction, production, refining, and distribution of petroleum and natural gas. These roles can include engineers, geologists, drill operators, safety inspectors, and technicians, among many others. The industry offers opportunities both onshore and offshore, and positions can be found in fields such as upstream (exploration and production), midstream (transportation), and downstream (refining and marketing). Working in oil and gas often requires specialized skills, training, and sometimes willingness to work in remote or challenging environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the oil and gas industry, and why are they important?

To thrive in the oil and gas industry, you need a solid background in engineering, geology, or related technical fields, often backed by a relevant degree or certification. Familiarity with industry-standard software (such as AutoCAD or Petrel), safety protocols, and compliance systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication skills help professionals excel in dynamic and sometimes hazardous environments. These competencies ensure safe operations, regulatory compliance, and the efficient extraction and management of resources.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in the oil and gas industry, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in the oil and gas industry often encounter challenges such as working in remote locations, managing environmental and safety regulations, and adapting to rapidly changing market conditions. To address these, companies typically provide comprehensive safety training, offer rotational schedules to support work-life balance, and invest in continuous education on regulatory compliance. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, geologists, and environmental specialists, is also crucial for problem-solving and ensuring projects run smoothly.

Job description

The Project Engineering Manager (PEM) is the single‐point owner for all engineering and technical matters on large capital projects (typically >$100MM). This role acts as the client‐side Project Engineering Manager, providing leadership, technical assurance, and integration across all engineering disciplines, EPC contractors, licensors, vendors, and internal stakeholders. Beyond delivering individual projects, this role is expected to build, standardize, and institutionalize engineering systems, processes, procedures, and tools that can be consistently applied across company projects—so success is repeatable, scalable, and not dependent on any single individual.

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act as the client Project Engineering Manager for all project engineering and technical matters from front‐end development through construction, commissioning, startup, and handover to operations.
  • Provide technical leadership and assurance across all disciplines, including:
  • Process Engineering
  • Mechanical (static & rotating)
  • Piping & Layout
  • Electrical
  • Instrumentation & Process Control
  • Utilities, off‐sites, and infrastructure
  • Serve as a credible technical authority capable of challenging EPC contractors, licensors, and vendors while maintaining strong working relationships.

QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical, or related discipline required).
  • Chartered Engineer or Professional Engineer (PE) preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience delivering major capital projects, preferably in chemical, petrochemical, oil & gas, or complex process industries.
  • Proven experience as a Project Engineering Manager or Lead Technical Integrator on large EPC‐executed projects.
  • Direct experience across front‐end development, FEED, detailed design, construction, commissioning, and handover to operations.
  • Demonstrated success managing:
  • EPC contractors
  • Process licensors
  • Complex vendor and packaged equipment scopes
  • Technical & Leadership Capability
  • Deep, working understanding of all major engineering disciplines.
  • Strong knowledge of process safety management and risk‐based design.
  • Ability to make sound technical judgments and influence decisions under uncertainty.
  • Demonstrated ability to build systems and processes that others can follow and replicate.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
