CONSTRUCTION PROJECT MANAGER INTERN
About the Company
Ruston Paving is a commercial and industrial paving construction contractor with offices in New York, Virginia, and North Carolina. Established in 1943, we are a family-oriented company that has been in business for three generations. Our company is capable of all types of asphalt paving projects ranging from minor repairs to major rehabilitation and new construction.
General Summary of the Position
Teamwork is a major part of every position at Ruston Paving, so it is important to note that, aside from all other listed responsibilities, you must be willing to assist others and be as productive as possible. The Construction Project Manager Intern will shadow a Senior Project Manager and be closely involved in the below project management responsibilities.
Essential Functions
The goal of our internship program is for the Intern to successfully estimate, acquire, prepare, and manage a project from start to finish with minimal oversight. The following is a description of the essential functions for the position. These are responsibilities that an individual must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation.
The Project Manager Intern will be responsible for estimating for hard bids and negotiated contracts, including the interpretation and quantification of plans and specifications, surveying of existing site conditions, solicitation of material and subcontractor bids, cost estimating, and the preparation of bid documents and proposals.
Other project management responsibilities will include assisting senior Project Managers in the planning, scheduling, purchasing, subcontract management, contract administration, customer relations, and all other activities necessary to carry a project from award to start-up through completion and final payment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
A good deal of responsibility falls on the Project Managers with help from the Project Manager Intern to ensure that projects are running smoothly and safely. What we look for in a good candidate includes:

  2. Ability to think outside the box.
  3. Prioritizes safety and doing things in the safest manner possible.

  6. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively speak and present information in group settings is preferred.
  7. Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills demonstrated by expressing a genuine interest in the thoughts, opinions, and needs of coworkers and customers.
  8. Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and time management with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  9. Strong analytical and problem solving skills demonstrated by the ability to deal with situations deviating from standardized and/or planned situations or procedures.
  10. Strong computer skills, including being proficient in Microsoft Office and related software.

Education and Experience
A successful Project Manager Intern will have diverse educational qualifications and technical skills to deliver on the job. These include:
  1. Currently working toward earning a Bachelor of Science degree in a construction-related discipline is preferred.
  2. CADD experience preferred but not required.
  3. Fluent in English. Ability to communicate in Spanish is a plus.
  4. Possession of a valid driver's license and clean driving record is required.
