Summary/Objective

The Fitter/Welder Helper assists experienced welders and fitters in the layout, preparation, and assembly of components used in OGI units. This entry-level position is designed to provide hands-on learning opportunities in welding and fitting, with the goal of developing the skills necessary to pass OGI's internal welding test and advance to a Fitter/Welder I role.

Essential Functions

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Assist with layout, measuring, and fitting of components under the supervision of qualified welders and fitters.
  • Hold, clamp, grind, and position parts for welding according to specifications.
  • Perform basic tack welding and assist with weld prep and post-weld cleanup.
  • Use hand tools, grinders, and other shop equipment to support the fabrication process.
  • Learn to read and interpret blueprints, welding symbols, and engineering drawings.
  • Develop welding and fitting skills through on-the-job training and supervised practice.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area; report any unsafe conditions or equipment to supervisors.
  • Comply with all safety rules and regulations, including the proper use of PPE.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

This position operates in a non-temperature-controlled metal fabrication environment. Exposure to loud noises, metal particles, dust, and fumes is expected. Personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, face shields, welding hoods, gloves, and steel-toe boots, is required.

Physical Demands

The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, bend, lift, and reach for extended periods of time. This position also requires frequent climbing and standing on ladders for extended durations while performing tasks at various heights. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and perform tasks requiring good vision, including depth perception and close focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Standard work hours are Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Overtime and weekend work may be required based on business needs.

Travel

No travel is expected for this position.

Required Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a high school welding program, vocational school, or technical college.
  • Some exposure to welding tools and safety practices through coursework or prior hands-on training.
  • Interest in welding and fabrication as a career
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Willingness to learn and advance within the organization

Preferred Education and Experience

Previous experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment

Enrollment in or completion of a welding or technical training program

Work Authorization/Security Clearance

None required for this position.
