What is an offshore rig?

An offshore rig job involves working on oil and gas drilling platforms located in oceans or seas. These jobs range from drilling and maintenance to engineering, catering, and safety management. Workers often operate in rotational shifts, typically spending weeks offshore before returning home. The work environment is physically demanding, with strict safety protocols due to hazardous conditions. Offshore rig jobs offer competitive salaries, benefits, and career growth opportunities, but they require specialized training and certifications.

What are the typical work schedules and living conditions like on an offshore rig?

Offshore rig workers generally follow a rotational schedule, such as two weeks on the rig followed by two weeks off, although schedules can vary by employer and region. While on duty, you'll live in company-provided accommodations on the rig itself, which typically offer shared cabins, communal dining facilities, and recreation areas. The living conditions are designed to support comfort and well-being during extended time at sea, but the environment can be remote and physically demanding. This structure allows workers to focus intensely on their jobs while on shift and enjoy extended time off between rotations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the offshore rig position, and why are they important?

To thrive in an Offshore Rig position, you need a solid understanding of drilling operations, mechanical systems, and safety procedures, often supported by technical training and certifications like BOSIET or HUET. Familiarity with drilling equipment, computerized monitoring systems, and industry-standard safety protocols is crucial. Strong teamwork, problem-solving skills, and resilience to challenging environments are valuable soft skills in this field. These abilities ensure safe, efficient operations and effective collaboration in the demanding offshore environment.

How can I get a job on an offshore rig?

To get a job on an offshore rig, candidates typically need relevant experience in the oil and gas industry, safety certifications such as BOSIET or HUET, and physical fitness. Applying through offshore staffing agencies or directly to oil companies, and demonstrating skills in drilling, maintenance, or safety, can improve employment prospects.

Job description

The Head of Supply Chain leads Seadrill's end-to-end Supply Chain function across its distributed operations in Angola, Brazil, Norway, the Gulf of Mexico, and APAC. The role directs a global team of regional Supply Chain Managers and functional leads, and is accountable for the planning and delivery of all Supply Chain activities in a safe, compliant, and cost-effective manner in support of rig operations. Reporting to the Director of Supply Chain, the role owns the global Supply Chain strategy and the multi-year improvement portfolio spanning procurement, category management, inventory, logistics, systems, and analytics. The Head of Supply Chain sets the framework, plan, and deliverables for the function; converts operational momentum into measurable value; and provides engaged, visible leadership to a diverse group of global and local professionals.

Responsibilities

Ensure efficient, effective Supply Chain services to rig operations so that all required materials and services are planned and delivered on time, mitigating risks and delays to operations.

Act as the escalation contact and key business partner for Supply Chain issues across all operating areas.

Oversee the logistics process across regions, ensuring 3PL service levels meet Company standards, and that freight costs and logistics processes are reviewed and improved.

Manage warehouses and the handling of overstocked and obsolete inventory; oversee reserve management of assets, components, and spares, and ensure policies for asset movement and disposal are followed.

Ensure offshore warehouses are maintained to Company standards and that rig OMCs are supported and trained on Company policies.

Lead common management and coordination of procurement processes across operating areas, ensuring adherence to policy and full use of global, regional, and local pricing agreements.

Partner with Category Management to align regional sourcing with global category strategies; run regional and local sourcing projects, develop capable new suppliers, and negotiate cost-effective contracts on behalf of the business.

Manage the assigned Supply Chain budget; oversee supplier spend and continuously identify savings and efficiency opportunities.

Liaise with Accounts Payable to ensure timely, accurate invoice payment.

Own the inventory strategy across rig clusters, distinguishing dead stock from live inventory and applying differentiated reduction and pooling strategies for critical spares.

Tie inventory reduction to reduced repair and maintenance purchasing budgets with Finance, so that reductions convert into realized cash savings.

Own Supply Chain master data quality and the Supply Chain systems landscape (Oracle Fusion and related tools), and drive integration between procurement and rig inventory systems to close visibility gaps.

Champion procurement automation, analytics, and the responsible adoption of AI and generative AI to improve forecasting, spend analysis, supplier performance, and decision support across the function.

Develop and maintain Supply Chain KPIs and dashboards in line with corporate guidelines; use data to monitor outcomes and drive continuous improvement.

Conduct duties in line with the Company Supply Chain Manual and relevant corporate and operational division manuals; develop location-specific policies aligned with corporate directives and ensure common understanding and compliance.

Ensure the Company's Code of Ethical Business Conduct and Insider Trading and Confidential Information Policy are respected, including Sarbanes-Oxley and FCPA compliance.

Conduct internal and external audit compliance for assigned areas and comply with the Total Management System, operating and technical procedures, and workplace instructions.

Maintain what already works while pursuing improvement, so that gains in one area are not traded off against proven performance in another.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management or a related field.

10-15 years' experience in Supply Chain, preferably including Procurement and/or Procure-to-Pay (P2P).

5-7 years' experience managing Supply Chain professionals and team leaders.

Preferred

5+ years' experience in oilfield services, drilling, or related manufacturing and construction industries.

Experience leading a multi-year Supply Chain optimization project or global transformation.

Exposure to modern Supply Chain analytics, automation, and AI-enabled ways of working.
