What is an offshore job in the USA?

Offshore jobs in the USA refer to employment opportunities located on offshore oil rigs, platforms, or vessels situated off the coast of the United States. These positions can include roles such as engineers, technicians, drillers, and support staff who work in the oil and gas industry. Offshore jobs typically require employees to work in shifts, often spending several weeks at sea followed by time off. These roles can be physically demanding and require specialized training for safety and technical skills. Offshore jobs often offer competitive salaries due to the challenging work environment.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an offshore engineer in the USA?

To thrive as an Offshore Engineer in the USA, you typically need a degree in engineering (such as mechanical, petroleum, or civil) and strong technical knowledge of offshore structures, drilling, and safety protocols. Familiarity with industry-standard software (like AutoCAD, ANSYS, and drilling simulation tools), as well as certifications such as BOSIET (Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training), are commonly required. Excellent problem-solving skills, teamwork, and adaptability are crucial soft skills due to the challenging and dynamic offshore environment. These qualifications and skills are vital for ensuring operational efficiency, safety compliance, and successful project outcomes in offshore settings.

Offshore professionals in the USA often encounter challenges such as adapting to different regulatory requirements, time zone coordination with teams abroad, and communication barriers. To address these, it's helpful to stay updated on local compliance standards, use collaborative tools for real-time communication, and participate in cross-cultural training. Many teams also implement regular check-ins and leverage technology to bridge any gaps, ensuring smooth workflow and integration with onshore colleagues.

Job description

Join DOF as our Logistics Coordinator

The Logistics Coordinator oversees complex logistics operations supporting subsea oil and gas projects, including offshore mobilizations, equipment movements, international shipments, and compliance with industryspecific regulatory requirements. This role ensures that critical subsea assets, tooling, and materials are delivered safely, efficiently, and on schedule to support project execution in offshore and onshore environments.

The ideal candidate brings deep experience in energy-sector logistics, strong vendor and vessel coordination skills, and the ability to manage highstakes timelines where delays directly impact operational readiness.

Responsibilities
  • Lead endtoend logistics planning for subsea projects, including mobilization and demobilization of vessels, ROV systems, tooling spreads, and specialized subsea equipment.
  • Coordinate international and domestic shipments, ensuring compliance with ITAR, EAR, DOT, IMDG, IATA, and other regulatory frameworks.
  • Manage freight forwarding partners, customs brokers, and thirdparty logistics providers to ensure timely and costeffective transport.
  • Oversee inventory accuracy for subsea assets, spares, and consumables; maintain visibility of equipment location and readiness status.
  • Develop logistics plans, loadout schedules, and documentation packages for offshore campaigns.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineering, HSE, and offshore operations to align logistics activities with project milestones.
  • Monitor vessel schedules, port availability, and weather impacts; adjust logistics plans proactively to mitigate operational risk.
  • Prepare and review shipping documentation, including commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin, and hazardous materials declarations.
  • Support procurement with vendor coordination, expediting, and delivery tracking for longlead subsea components.
  • Identify process improvements to reduce cost, increase efficiency, and strengthen supply chain resilience.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact during mobilizations, ensuring all equipment is staged, inspected, and delivered to quayside according to project requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Business, Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • 5-8+ years of logistics experience in subsea, offshore oil & gas, marine operations, or heavy industrial sectors.
  • Strong understanding of offshore mobilization processes, port operations, and vessel logistics.
  • Proven experience managing international shipments, customs clearance, and regulatory compliance.
  • Proficiency with logistics and assettracking systems; WASP experience is a plus.
  • Ability to interpret technical equipment lists, engineering drawings, and mobilization plans.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to coordinate across multidisciplinary teams and external partners.
  • Ability to work in fastpaced environments with shifting priorities and tight deadlines.
  • Willingness to support occasional afterhours or weekend work during mobilizations.

Is this the perfect role for you, but you don't meet every single requirement? We value the right person over a perfect match to a job description. Research shows that underrepresented groups are less likely to apply unless they meet every listed requirement, and we don't want that to hold great talent back, so we encourage you to apply. It's the best way for us to find the right talent for this role, or another, and that could be you.

Location

This role supports both office in Houston, TX and some field activity support, including time spent at ports, warehouses, and quayside during mobilizations. Occasional travel to offshore bases, fabrication yards, or vendor facilities may be required. Application due date: 08.21.2026
