Offshore Drafting information

What is offshore drafting?

Offshore drafting refers to the process of creating technical drawings, plans, and blueprints for engineering or construction projects by utilizing teams located in offshore locations, often in countries with lower labor costs. These drafters use specialized software to produce detailed schematics for architects, engineers, and manufacturers. Offshore drafting can help companies save time and money while maintaining high-quality standards, especially for repetitive or large-scale projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an offshore drafter, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Offshore Drafter, you need strong skills in technical drawing, CAD software proficiency, and a solid understanding of offshore engineering concepts, often supported by a diploma or degree in drafting or engineering technology. Familiarity with AutoCAD, MicroStation, and industry standards such as ASME or API is typically required, along with experience handling document management systems. Attention to detail, effective communication, and teamwork are standout soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate, compliant designs and smooth collaboration with engineering teams, which are critical for the safety and success of offshore projects.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in offshore drafting, and how can they be addressed?

Offshore drafting professionals often work across different time zones and may encounter communication barriers with onshore teams. These challenges can be addressed by establishing clear communication protocols, using collaborative project management tools, and scheduling regular check-ins to ensure alignment. Additionally, understanding regional drafting standards and adapting to varying client requirements are essential for success in this role. Being proactive in seeking clarification and staying updated on industry software can greatly enhance productivity and accuracy.

Are offshore drafters still in demand?

Offshore drafters are still in demand in industries such as engineering, construction, and manufacturing, where detailed technical drawings are essential. The role often requires proficiency with CAD software and knowledge of industry standards, and demand can vary based on project volume and economic factors.

Job description

About Outlook

Outlook Tax & Advisory is a growing accounting and advisory firm serving small and mid-sized businesses across the U.S. We file roughly 1,500 returns per year across individuals, S-corps, partnerships, C-corps, non-profits, and trusts. Beyond compliance, we provide ongoing tax planning, strategy, and advisory work, quarterly reviews, year-end planning, and transaction support, for clients who want a real tax partner rather than just a preparer. Our production is supported by an offshore preparation and review team; our U.S.-based leadership owns final review, client relationships, and quality standards.

We are hiring a Senior Tax Manager to own technical review and quality across the practice. This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys solving complex tax issues and serving as the firm's technical authority while helping mentor and develop a growing team of tax professionals. This is the role for a senior tax professional who wants both technical depth and direct client work, leading complex reviews during busy season and owning strategic planning and advisory work year-round. As our practice continues to expand, this individual will play a key role in shaping our tax department, building technical capabilities, and establishing best practices across the firm.

The Role

You’ll personally review ~30% of our returns that need senior eyes: complex corporate filings, multi-state and consolidated returns, partnerships with tricky allocations, high-net-worth individuals, trusts, and anything our offshore team flags for escalation. For the remaining ~70%, you’ll oversee the offshore review process: spot-checking sampled returns, calibrating the offshore senior reviewer, refining checklists and review standards, and catching systemic issues before they become filing problems.

You'll lead tax planning and advisory work directly with our higher-tier clients. That includes quarterly tax strategy reviews, year-end planning, transaction-driven work (entity restructuring, M&A, real estate, R&D credits, retirement plan design), and reactive advisory on whatever clients bring to you.

You’ll work with a small U.S. team (2–3 direct reports) and coordinate closely with the offshore production team.

Your North Star: every return we file is technically correct and on time; every client conversation leaves them better-informed and better positioned.

What You’ll Do

Direct review

  • Review approximately 30% of all returns (~450/year, concentrated in busy season), focused on complex 1120, 1120S, 1065, 1041, 990, and multi-state individual returns
  • Sign and file returns under your CPA license where appropriate
  • Document review notes, technical positions, and decisions for the file

Offshore quality oversight

  • Spot-check sampled returns from offshore senior reviewer’s queue (target 10–15% sampling rate)
  • Provide structured feedback to offshore senior reviewer; calibrate review standards regularly
  • Identify systemic preparation issues and partner with offshore team lead to address them
  • Maintain and evolve the firm’s review checklist, technical position library, and quality standards

Tax planning and advisory

  • Lead quarterly tax strategy reviews with a defined book of advisory clients
  • Run year-end planning engagements: scenario modeling, deferral/acceleration strategies, retirement plan design, estimated tax adjustments
  • Handle transaction-driven work as it comes up: entity restructuring, M&A tax support, real estate transactions, R&D credit studies, cost segregation
  • Serve as the named tax advisor for higher-tier clients. They call you with questions, you own the relationship
  • Document planning decisions and positions clearly so they survive into future returns

Team support and development

  • Lead 2–3 U.S.-based direct reports (senior staff and reviewers)
  • Provide technical guidance and training across the broader team
  • Handle escalations from offshore preparers and U.S. staff on complex technical issues

Practice contribution

  • Research and document positions on complex tax issues; draft technical memos
  • Stay current on federal and multi-state tax law changes; communicate relevant updates internally
  • Contribute to process improvements, software optimization, and tooling decisions
  • Support quarterly planning calls and year-end tax strategy reviews for select clients

Compensation

  • Base salary: Competitive, commensurate with experience
  • Annual performance bonus: Up to 20% of base, tied to quality metrics and review throughput
  • Benefits: Employer-supported medical, dental, vision; 401(k); $500 annual wellness benefit; CPE coverage via preferred vendor
  • Remote-first with quarterly in-person team meetings
  • Continuing education support including CPA CPE hours

Who You Are

  • Active CPA license: required, non-negotiable
  • 8+ years in public accounting: with at least 4 years in a senior review capacity
  • High-volume review experience: you’ve personally reviewed 400+ returns per season at a previous role and can speak to your throughput
  • Client-facing planning experience: you've led tax strategy conversations directly with business owners, CFOs, and high-net-worth individuals, not just reviewed others' work
  • Deep technical knowledge across entity types (1120, 1120S, 1065, 1041, 990, 1040 complex)
  • Multi-state expertise: apportionment, nexus, composite filings, PTE elections
  • Comfortable with offshore team dynamics: you’ve worked with offshore preparers before, or you can articulate clearly how you’d build the right working relationship from scratch
  • Process-oriented: you’ve built or substantially improved a review process at a previous firm
  • Independent operator: you don’t need close supervision, and you don’t want it. You’re confident in your judgment and know when to escalate
  • Strong written communicator: you can write a technical memo, document a complex position, and give feedback that lands

Nice to Have

  • Experience with CCH Axcess or CCH ProSystem fx (preferred); working experience with other platforms like Drake, Lacerte, ProConnect, or UltraTax is also useful
  • Experience with Karbon or comparable workflow software
  • Prior experience reviewing returns prepared by offshore teams specifically (India, Philippines, etc.)
  • Specialization in a niche (real estate, construction, professional services, e-commerce, etc.)
  • Experience signing returns as preparer of record at scale
