How much do offshore cyber security jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 16, 2026, the average yearly pay for offshore cyber security in the United States is $132,962.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $111,000.00 and $150,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Can you make $500,000 a year in cyber security?

Senior cybersecurity professionals, such as security architects or chief information security officers, can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially with extensive experience, advanced certifications, and leadership roles. Entry-level or mid-level cybersecurity jobs typically have lower salaries, but high-level positions in large organizations or specialized fields can reach or exceed this income level.

What is the 80 20 rule in cyber security?

In cyber security, the 80/20 rule suggests that approximately 80% of security issues are caused by 20% of vulnerabilities or threats. For offshore cyber security professionals, focusing on the most critical vulnerabilities and implementing prioritized security measures can improve overall defense efficiency and reduce risk exposure.

Are there cyber jobs on oil rigs?

Offshore cybersecurity jobs exist on oil rigs, where professionals are responsible for protecting critical systems such as control systems, communication networks, and data. These roles often require specialized knowledge of industrial control systems, security protocols, and certifications like CISSP or GIAC, and may involve working in remote or challenging environments with specific safety and security protocols.

What is the difference between Offshore Cyber Security vs Cyber Security Analyst?

AspectOffshore Cyber SecurityCyber Security Analyst
CredentialsCertifications like CISSP, CEH, CompTIA Security+Certifications like CISSP, CEH, CompTIA Security+
Work EnvironmentRemote teams, offshore offices, global companiesOn-site or remote within organizations
Employer & IndustryIT service providers, multinational corporationsBusinesses across various sectors, government agencies

Offshore Cyber Security involves managing security tasks remotely, often for multiple clients or companies, with a focus on global or offshore teams. In contrast, a Cyber Security Analyst typically works within a specific organization to monitor, analyze, and respond to security threats directly. Both roles require similar certifications but differ mainly in work setting and scope.

What are some unique challenges faced by offshore cyber security professionals, and how can applicants prepare for them?

Offshore cyber security professionals often contend with securing critical infrastructure in remote and challenging environments, such as oil rigs or maritime vessels, where connectivity can be limited and physical access is restricted. They must be adept at implementing robust security protocols despite these constraints, often working with legacy systems and coordinating incident responses across multiple time zones and cultures. Applicants can prepare by gaining experience with industrial control systems (ICS), familiarizing themselves with maritime or energy sector regulations, and developing strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with onshore and offshore teams.

What is offshore cyber security?

Offshore cyber security refers to the protection of information systems, networks, and data on offshore platforms, such as oil rigs, wind farms, or maritime vessels, from cyber threats and attacks. These environments face unique challenges due to their remote locations, reliance on specialized operational technology, and connectivity to onshore networks. Offshore cyber security professionals are responsible for identifying vulnerabilities, implementing security measures, and ensuring compliance with industry regulations to prevent unauthorized access, data breaches, or disruptions to critical operations.

Is 25 too late for cyber security?

Offshore cyber security roles often value skills, certifications, and experience over age. Many professionals start or transition into cybersecurity in their mid-20s or later, and continuous learning through certifications like CISSP or CompTIA Security+ can enhance job prospects regardless of age.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Offshore Cyber Security professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Offshore Cyber Security professional, you need expertise in network security, risk assessment, and incident response, often supported by a degree in information security or computer science and certifications such as CISSP or CISM. Familiarity with security information and event management (SIEM) tools, intrusion detection systems, and OT/ICS security platforms is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help you identify threats and collaborate with diverse offshore teams. These skills are essential for protecting critical infrastructure from cyber threats and ensuring the operational continuity of offshore facilities.
