Job description

Synergy, a leading Boston commercial real estate firm, seeks a Commercial Building Engineer. This individual will be a key member of our engineering staff, working under limited supervision, performing all maintenance duties and responding to work orders, tenant calls and other operational/administrative duties for an urban office building in Boston.

Commercial Building Engineer Essential Duties & Responsibilities
What we're looking for you to do:
  • Monitors building system operations and performance. Utilizes several trade skills such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, roofing, heating and cooling.
  • Oversees and inspects the work performed by outside contractors. Contracted work includes landscaping, snow removal, remodeling, HVAC, plumbers, and cleaning.
  • Performs repairs, emergency and preventive maintenance. Completes maintenance and repair records as required.
  • Reviews assigned work orders. Estimates time and materials needed to complete repair. Orders necessary materials and supplies to complete all tasks.
  • Manages an energy management program to ensure measures are taken to operate all systems in the most efficient manner to keep operating costs at a minimum.
  • Maintains the building lighting system, including element and ballast repairs or replacements. Performs miscellaneous engineering and maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Responds quickly to emergency situations, summoning additional assistance as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Commercial Building Engineer Qualifications: What we're looking for in you:
  • 3-5 years' commercial office experience in building maintenance and operations. Hands-on knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, DDC/pneumatic controls, Energy Management Systems (EMS), and related building mechanical systems preferred.
  • Refrigeration or Electrical license a plus but not required.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and customer service skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Outlook; experience with electronic work order and preventative maintenance systems.
  • The candidate must have a valid Massachusetts driver's license.

Work Conditions & Essential Physical Characteristics
  • Work to be performed both inside the property and outside with exposure to weather, fumes, electrical current and machine noise.
  • Frequent walking, standing, bending, climbing, repetitive use of hands, power hand grasping, and reaching above and below shoulder level.
  • Occasional sitting squatting, crawling, kneeling.
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment and machinery. May be required to lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds and occasionally weighing up to 75 pounds.

The likely base hourly rate for this position is $31-58/hr, representing our best estimate. Final salary decisions take into account market-competitive data, as well as each candidate's background and experience. As a result, actual offers may vary based on geographic location, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and internal equity. Please note that this salary range is not guaranteed, and the final offer may fall outside of the stated range.
