What does an Octave engineer do?

Octave engineers are professionals who specialize in using GNU Octave, an open-source programming language primarily used for numerical computations. Their work often involves developing algorithms, performing data analysis, and creating simulations, especially in fields like engineering, science, and mathematics. Octave engineers may also write scripts to automate tasks, analyze large datasets, or prototype mathematical models. Because Octave is highly compatible with MATLAB, these engineers often contribute to projects where cost-effective or open-source solutions are preferred.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an Octave software engineer?

To thrive as an Octave software engineer, you need a solid background in mathematics, programming, and numerical analysis, typically with a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Proficiency in GNU Octave, MATLAB, and version control systems like Git is essential, along with experience in scripting and data analysis tools. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with teams and convey complex solutions. These competencies ensure the development of robust, efficient algorithms and support effective teamwork in scientific computing environments.

What are common challenges faced by Octave therapists when supporting clients with complex mental health needs?

Octave therapists often work with clients experiencing a wide range of mental health concerns, which can present unique challenges such as managing high caseloads, navigating complex co-occurring conditions, and ensuring personalized care in a fast-paced environment. Therapists collaborate closely with psychiatrists, care coordinators, and other clinicians to develop integrated treatment plans, which requires strong communication and teamwork skills. Staying current with evidence-based practices and balancing documentation with client-facing time are also important aspects of the role.

Job description

About Octave

Octave is a modern mental health practice that offers both in‑person and virtual therapy. We focus on making high‑quality care more accessible and affordable by partnering with insurance providers. Our goal is to support clients and clinicians with a system built on equity, effectiveness, and sustainability.

About the Role

Octave is seeking to partner with existing group practices in California (Los Angeles, Sacramento, Riverside, San Francisco, and San Diego areas) that want to provide excellent mental health care, both in‑person and virtually. As an Octave partner, your team will join a supportive community of clinicians focused on client‑centered, evidence‑based therapy.
At Octave, we take care of all backend operations so your clinicians can focus on providing care. Our team manages credentialing, billing, marketing, technology support, and client referrals. This allows your clinicians to focus primarily on seeing the clients we connect them with and completing session documentation, removing the administrative burden from your group practice.

Your providers will support adult clients managing stress, anxiety, depression, and related concerns. We emphasize evidence‑based practices such as CBT and DBT with a strong commitment to culturally responsive care.

What You’ll Do
  • Provide therapy to adults dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, and other concerns.
  • Use short‑term, evidence‑based approaches like CBT or DBT.
  • Offer culturally responsive care.
  • See clients virtually and/or in person (you must have your own office space to hold in‑person sessions).
Qualifications for Group Practices
  • Must have at least 3 fully licensed clinicians who would join Octave.
  • Required to have your own office space and be willing to provide in‑person services within the hiring markets.
  • All clinicians must be fully licensed (no associate or intern level providers).
  • Licensed in California (LMFT, LPCC, LCSW, PsyD).
  • Must be licensed and in good standing with your governing licensing board.
  • At least 1 year of post‑license experience (2+ preferred).
  • Training in therapies such as CBT, DBT, trauma‑focused treatments, or similar.
  • Certain payor relationships may exclude you from employment.
  • Master’s Degree or higher from an accredited school of Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or Marriage, Family, and Child Counseling.
Octave's Company Values
  • We’re human beings first. We operate with empathy and kindness – with our clients, collaborators, and ourselves.
  • People deserve better than status quo. We tackle the intractable problems, no matter how big, and challenge ourselves and others to make a difference.
  • No bystanders. No stars. No tourists. Each person has been selected to be here and is responsible for sharing ideas and expertise.
  • Partnership paves the path ahead. We work together, internally and externally, to transform the system.
  • Quality is crucial at scale. Quality is core to our business, and we refuse to sacrifice it as we grow.
  • Progress is a process. We iterate, reflect, learn, and adjust, leaving things better than we found them.
  • There are people behind every data point. Numbers tell one part of the story; we understand impacts at the individual level.
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must communicate frequently with others through virtual meeting applications such as Zoom and Google Meet.
  • Must use a laptop for observing and communicating information.
  • Move up to 10 pounds on occasion.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Octave’s policy requires that all clinical sessions be conducted while you are physically located in the United States.
System Requirements
  • Computers that run Mac OS (Ventura or later) and Windows OS (10/11).
  • Computers kept up with the most recent security updates.
  • An unmanaged device (not provided by another company/organization).

Additionally, Octave IT does not support using iOS, Android, or ChromeOS as your primary device.
