What is ocean science?

Ocean science, also known as oceanography, is the study of the ocean and its processes, including the physical, chemical, biological, and geological aspects of the marine environment. Ocean scientists investigate topics such as ocean currents, marine life, ecosystems, and how oceans interact with the atmosphere and climate. Their research helps us understand environmental changes, manage marine resources, and protect ocean health.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in ocean science, and why are they important?

To excel in Ocean Science, a strong background in marine biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics is essential, typically supported by a relevant degree such as oceanography or marine science. Familiarity with scientific research methods, field sampling equipment, GIS software, and data analysis tools like MATLAB or R is commonly required. Critical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating on research projects and sharing findings with stakeholders. These competencies enable professionals to conduct rigorous research, contribute to marine conservation, and address complex environmental challenges.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in ocean science and how can they be addressed?

Ocean scientists often face challenges such as conducting research in remote and harsh marine environments, dealing with limited access to research vessels or equipment, and navigating complex regulatory requirements for sample collection. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and institutions can help overcome logistical hurdles, while staying updated on technological advancements (such as remote sensing and autonomous underwater vehicles) can ease data collection. Building strong communication skills is also crucial, as ocean science frequently involves conveying findings to policymakers, stakeholders, and the public.

What is the difference between Ocean Science vs Marine Biology?

How much do ocean scientists get paid?

Ocean scientists' salaries vary based on experience, education, and location, but typically range from $50,000 to $100,000 annually. Entry-level positions may start lower, while experienced researchers or those with advanced degrees can earn higher salaries, especially in government or private sectors involved in research and environmental consulting.

What are jobs that work in ocean science?

Jobs in ocean science include oceanographers, marine biologists, marine chemists, and physical oceanographers. These roles involve studying ocean ecosystems, climate interactions, and marine resources, often requiring fieldwork, data analysis, and specialized equipment like sonar and sampling tools.

What can you do with an ocean science degree?

An ocean science degree prepares individuals for careers such as marine biologist, oceanographer, environmental consultant, or research scientist. Graduates often work in research institutions, government agencies, or environmental organizations, utilizing skills in data analysis, fieldwork, and laboratory techniques.

We are a renewable energy and ocean technology company committed to rapidly developing and deploying technologies that will ensure a sustainable future for Earth by unlocking the vast energy potential of its oceans. Our focus is on capturing civilizational levels of ultra-low-cost renewable energy for applications including computing and affordable renewable fuels delivered to shore.

The company is a public benefit corporation headquartered in Portland, Oregon and backed by leading venture capitalists, philanthropic investors, university endowments, and private investment offices. We operate as an idea meritocracy where the best ideas change the company's direction on a regular basis.

About the Job

Our core technology is the node, a device that produces energy in the ocean's harshest conditions for years at a time without human maintenance or intervention. We are now scaling the manufacturing of this technology, and the talent we bring on board will be critical to that journey.ย

Our organization is entering an exciting manufacturing scale-up phase of growth, and building a world-class team is critical to our success. We are seeking a Senior Technical Recruiter, Manufacturing to support full-cycle recruiting efforts for technical roles across the organization. This person will bring deep expertise in talent acquisition strategy, sourcing, and candidate engagement within manufacturing and hardware environments to help us scale thoughtfully and intentionally. In close partnership with hiring managers and cross-functional stakeholders, this role will focus on identifying and securing top talent across production, operations, quality, and engineering functions while ensuring an exceptional candidate experience. The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, high-impact environment and bring a continuous improvement mindset to everything they do.

Candidates should have strong interpersonal skills and be able to thrive in a creative, scrappy, and collaborative environment in which the best ideas change the company's direction on a regular basis. If you have recruited for manufacturing or hardware organizations and love the challenge of finding rare, specialized talent, we want you to apply.ย

Our staff have worked at organizations such as SpaceX, Blue Origin, Boeing, Tesla, Apple, Virgin Orbit, Astra, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, New Relic, Bridgewater, Raytheon, Disney Imagineering, and the US Army and Air Force, as well as research universities, startups, and small companies across a range of industries.ย

Responsibilities
  • Manage full-cycle recruitment for highly specialized roles across our organization such as manufacturing, engineering, science, and technical functions with ability to support other functions from entry level to executive as needed.
  • Partner closely with hiring managers to understand team needs, role requirements, and ideal candidate profiles - including for roles tied to production scale-up and operations.
  • Develop and execute sourcing strategies to attract top technical and manufacturing talent through a mix of outbound search, referrals, and targeted campaigns.
  • Screen and assess candidates for technical and cultural alignment, guiding them through the interview process with a high-touch approach.
  • Working with our coordinator and hiring managers to gather requirements and support the smooth scheduling of onsite interviews, including logistics and ensuring a welcoming candidate experience.
  • Maintain strong pipelines of qualified candidates for high-priority and hard-to-fill positions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners including People Operations and hiring teams to ensure a smooth and consistent candidate experience.
  • Leverage recruiting data and market insights to inform search strategies and advise on hiring decisions.
  • Represent the company in conversations with candidates, acting as a knowledgeable and compelling ambassador of our mission and work.
  • Stay up to date on industry trends, compensation benchmarks, and evolving best practices in technical and manufacturing recruiting.
Required Qualifications
  • 5+ years of full-cycle recruiting experience, with a proven track record of hiring for manufacturing, technical, engineering, and scientific roles.
  • Experience recruiting for scaling manufacturing organizations, including roles in production engineering, quality, supply chain, and operations.ย
  • Demonstrated success in sourcing and engaging hard-to-find technical and manufacturing talent through outbound search, referrals, and targeted outreach.
  • Experience recruiting in startup or high-growth environments where priorities and structures evolve quickly.
  • Strong communicator with a candidate-first mindset and commitment to delivering an exceptional experience throughout the hiring process.
  • Strong knowledge and experience using applicant tracking systems (ideally Greenhouse) and sourcing tools such as LinkedIn Recruiter, Gem, or equivalent.
  • Adaptable and proactive, with the ability to operate effectively in environments that are fast-moving and often ambiguous.
  • Proven ability to partner effectively with hiring managers and cross-functional teams to define role requirements and hiring strategies.
  • Skilled in evaluating candidates for both technical capabilities and cultural alignment.
  • Experience managing pipelines for high-volume and hard-to-fill roles in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfortable using data and market insights to guide decision-making and improve recruiting outcomes.
  • Confident and genuine in representing company mission and culture to candidates.
  • Knowledge of current recruiting trends, compensation norms, and best practices in technical manufacturing hiring.
  • Curiosity about emerging technologies, hardware development, and manufacturing processes, and a genuine interest in the technical and scientific work of the teams you support.
Additional Requirements

Intermittently able to work longer hours and weekends to support critical needs. While we expect a lot of each other, we also offer a high degree of autonomy and work-life balance, including unlimited PTO and flexible working hours.

Compensation and Benefits

If hired for this full-time role, you will receive:

  • Cash compensation of $110,000 - $155,000.
  • Equity in the company. We're all owners and if we're successful, this equity should be far and away the most valuable component of your compensation.
